• The NHL has signed what it is calling a “ groundbreaking partnership” with the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, which will “support research, action, advocacy and collaboration with organizations that have a significant community impact.” Full story here.

• Dick Vitale, 80, has signed a contract extension with ESPN through the 2021-22 season, adding to a recent extension unveiled last May.

• Recently retired NBA star Tony Parker has been named president of NorthRock Sports, Artists and Entertainment, a division of Northrock Partners, a finance and lifestyle advisory firm that currently oversees $1.5 billion in assets, whose holdings include Golf Magazine, Golf.com and the Nicklaus Companies in partnership with golf legend Jack Nicklaus.

• The PGA Tour has signed a ten-year deal naming global consulting firm Korn Ferry title sponsor for the Korn Ferry Tour, replacing Web.com, which awards PGA Tour membership to the tour’s 50 leading players. The Los Angeles-based company also becomes the “official leadership development firm” for the PGA Tour.

• The WTA will premiere the NYJTL Bronx Open, Aug. 16-24, in the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in The Bronx, NY. The women’s tournament will take place the week before the U.S. Open in New York and offer $250,000 in prize money.

• SunTrust and BB&T financial firms said that Truist Financial would be the name of the company following their merger later this year. The name — “intended to give the bank a single, fresh identity” — could also become the new name for the home venue for the Atlanta Braves, now known as SunTrust Stadium.

• Pete Frates and Pat Quinn, co-founders of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, have launched with The ALS Assn. the 5th anniversary of “Challenge Me” with a “new call to action to reignite the passion and generosity of the millions of people who dumped ice water on their heads in the summer of 2014.”

NHL Hitting All-Star Game Ice With adidas Recycled ‘Save The Ocean’ Parley Jerseys

The NHL and partner adidas are bringing some innovations to the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Game the month that could impact not just hockey but global recycling efforts.

The league said players would wear “eco-innovative and ocean-inspired adizero Authentic jerseys” made from repurposed and upcycled materials created in partnership with Parley for the Oceans.

The special-edition jerseys will be worn exclusively for the 2019 SAP NHL All-Star Skills (Jan. 25) and the Honda NHL All-Star Game (Jan. 26) in SAP Center, San Jose, Calif., home of the San Jose Sharks.

The jerseys, for the first time at the NHL All-Star Game, will also feature the team logo for each respective player. Previously, All-Star jerseys have featured the NHL shield (which this year will appear on jersey shoulders) and conference logo.

"As the creator sports brand, we create products tailored for an athlete, their sport, life and world and we're excited to introduce the special edition adizero Authentic Pro x Parley jerseys," Dan Near, senior director of adidas hockey, said via the brand.

"This initiative continues adidas' commitment to bring the brand's biggest initiatives to the sport of hockey.”

Adidas has been working with Parley for the Oceans in other areas, including adidas x Parley running and workout sportswear created entirely from reclaimed or intercepted ocean plastic.

This week, adidas is bringing Parley sportswear to the Australian Open, the brand’s first such endeavor in tennis.

It is supported by a multi-media campaign, “adidas Tennis x Parley: Play for the Oceans,” with tennis star Alex Zverev (ranked No. 4 in the world), Ian Thorpe (former Australian swimmer and five-time Olympic gold medal winner) and Australian model Mimi Elashiry, all adidas spokespersons.

In addition to the special edition adizero Authentic Pro x Parley jerseys, each NHL player and coach will receive adidas x Parley gear, including adidas ZNE hoodies and pants.

NHL All-Star Weekend will see the integration of Parley with several activations at Fan Fest and inside SAP Center Arena.

Adidas and Parley, as part of their partnership and joint commitments to ending marine plastic pollution through the Parley AIR Strategy (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign), "rework marine plastic waste materials into technical fibers that create the material framework of a durable, yet breathable fabric that is optimal for adidas performance apparel."

According to Brian Jennings, NHL chief branding officer and evp, ”The NHL is a recognized leader in addressing major environmental challenges and preserving the roots of our game (and) adidas has been an incredible partner in our efforts and shares our commitment to promoting sustainable business practices.

“Each year, the NHL All-Star Weekend serves as an opportunity to showcase innovations across all aspects of our game. This year's NHL All-Star Game in San Jose is the perfect setting for adidas to introduce environmentally-conscious jerseys that complement our focus on environmental stewardship."

The special edition adidas adizero Authentic Pro NHL All-Star x Parley jerseys will be available at adidas.com, adidas.CA, NHLShop.com, NHLShop.ca and NHL team stores. (MSRP $200.)
