Journey To Mars: Grammy-Winning Artist Will Star In Pepsi Halftime Show

By Barry Janoff

September 9, 2013: Bruno Mars has sold more than 100 million records worldwide as a singer, producer and songwriter. Now, he is about to perform in front of more than 110 million people.

The NFL and marketing partner PepsiCo said Sunday that Grammy-award winner Mars would be the headline performer in the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show.

Super Bowl XLVIII will be broadcast on Fox and is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2014, in MetLife Stadium, home venue for the New York Giants and Jets.

"We're going to the Super Bowl — Pepsi Halftime Show," Mars tweeted out to his nearly 17 million followers on Twitter on Sunday.

Mars follows in the Super Bowl halftime footsteps of such performers as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, The Black Eyed Peas and Madonna.

Beyoncé was the star of the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show this past February. More than 110 million people watched the performance, according to the NFL, which included a reunion of Destiny's Child.

The Bruno Mars unveiling was made live from Times Square in New York on Sunday during Fox NFL Sunday. (See the full spot here.)

Beyoncé has since gone on to sign a $50 million deal with Pepsi that includes endorsements (such as Pepsi commercials and other activations) and creative opportunities worldwide.

The naming of the Super Bowl halftime lead entertainer usually does not occur until midseason. The NFL and Pepsi said that the "unprecedented" timing of this year's announcement was done to take advantage of several season-long marketing activations, as well as the location of Super Bowl XLVIII in the New York/New Jersey area.

"Fans are encouraged to tune into Fox Sports throughout the season to see what surprises Bruno Mars has in store for this historic halftime show," the NFL said in a statement.

Pepsi said it would continue its “Are You Fan Enough?” campaign during the 2013 season with activation that would "culminate at halftime" of Super Bowl XLVIII.

Fans looking for Mars' New York connection do not have to drill too far into his history. Although born and raised in Hawaii, Mars — whose real name is Peter Gene Hernandez — can trace his roots back to New York: His dad, Peter, is from Brooklyn. He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide as a singer, producer and songwriter.

Pepsi sponsored the halftime show in 2007 during Super Bowl XLI (headlined by Prince), then took over last year from Bridgestone as title sponsor of the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. The multiyear deal will also cover Super Bowl XLIX in the University of Phoenix Stadium and the historic Super Bowl L in Levi's Stadium, which will be the new home of the San Francisco 49ers.
