NBA New Virtual Reality Gaming Platform ‘Unlike Any Other Product On The Market’

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

June 19, 2019:
Adding to its roster of gaming and legal sports betting platforms, the NBA, along with the National Basketball Players Assn., have signed a deal with Highlight Games Limited to create “NBA Last 90,” an exclusive virtual sports betting game that will utilize real NBA highlights and footage.

NBA Last 90 players will have the ability to wager on various outcomes — including which team will win, who will score on the first possession and the total number of points scored by both teams — during the last 90 seconds of a simulated match-up between two NBA teams.

A vast archive of NBA highlights and footage will be randomly pulled from any match-up over recent seasons between the two teams, producing millions of possible outcomes, according to Highlight Games Limited, a specialist gaming supplier.

“NBA Last 90 features real NBA stars and real NBA highlights, differentiating it from any other virtual sports product on the market,” Tim Green, CEO for Highlight Games, said via the company,

The game will be distributed to licensed gaming operators in multiple regions worldwide, initially launching in Europe, then expanding to include the U.S. later in the 2019-20 NBA season.

NBA Last 90 will hit across multiple channels, including retail locations, online and in mobile applications.

“Virtual sports betting is incredibly popular in regions around the world and we’re looking forward to giving fans another innovative way to engage with the NBA,” Scott Kaufman-Ross, head of fantasy & gaming for the NBA, said via the league.

“With NBA Last 90, Highlight Games has created a new spin on virtual sports basketball and delivered an authentic gaming experience utilizing real NBA content.”

The NBA already has legal sports betting deals that include MGM Resorts International, Sportradar, Genius Sports and The Stars Group.

Annual revenue for the NBA could increase by nearly $600 million due to legal sports betting, including $160 million from spending by betting operators and data providers and $78 million from sponsorship revenue, via a report from the American Gaming Assn.

According to Highlight Games’ Green, “Highlight Games has an ambitious strategy to enter the nascent U.S. sports betting and virtual sports market, and this collaboration is the first important step on that journey.

“We’re confident that players around the world will be instantly engaged with NBA Last 90.”
