Why It's Okay To Call Dr. J, Bird Fatheads; Jordan Scores With Mitchell & Van Ness

Larry Bird scores a Fathead.October 20, 2009: The company that made it fashionable to stick life-size reproductions of sports stars on your wall has now made it hip to turn your home into a virtual basketball Hall of Fame. Fathead said it has launched a line of life-sized wall graphics of NBA Legends to add to its line of current NBA stars and team logos.

The new NBA Legends SKU includes Larry Bird, Julius Erving, Hakeem Olajuwon, Isiah Thomas, Clyde "the Glide" Drexler, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Dominique Wilkins, Scottie Pippen and Patrick Ewing. Each of these Fatheads also comes with seven additional pieces, including a limited edition ticket and Hardwood Classics logo, according to the company.

"These extraordinary athletes and legends conjure up timeless moments that have inspired fans around the globe,” Patrick McInnis, CEO for Fathead, said in a statement. “We are honored to produce these NBA greats just in time for the 2009-2010 season.”

In separate news about an NBA legend, Mitchell & Ness said it would release a limited-edition Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls rookie jersey on Oct. 26 to honor of the 25th anniversary of Jordan's first official NBA game: Oct. 26, 1984. The company said it would produce only 1,264 of these Bulls jerseys, each numbered to coincide with every regular season, post-season and All-Star game Jordan played in his 15 NBA seasons.

Each box also includes a silver-plated game recap that highlights Jordan’s box score from that particular game. In that very first game, Jordan scored 16 points. (5-16 from the field, 6-7 from the line) against the then Washington Bullets.

The collection will be available on Oct. 26 at three retail destinations worldwide while supplies last: the NBA Store in New York, the Chicago Bulls team store and the Mitchell & Ness flagship store Philadelphia. A number of these limited-edition Jordan jerseys also will be available online exclusively at www.NBAstore.com. MSRP is $375.

The NBA Store in New York (located on 5th Avenue) said it would stay open an hour later that day, 7:30-8:30 PM, to coincide with the tip off time of Jordan's original game.

“Michael Jordan changed the game of basketball and sports, in general, the moment he first stepped onto an NBA court”, Sean McKinney, president of Mitchell & Ness, said in a statement. “As a company that focuses on sports history, we felt it was important to recognize that moment and celebrate Michael’s legendary career in a very special way."
