NBA Puts New Spin On 2009-10 Version Of Hardwood Classics Nights

December 1, 2009: The NBA and its teams will again celebrate their history with more than 60 retro games under the NBA Hardwood Classics Nights banner.

Key to the Hardwood Classics event is that merchandise is available exclusively at the NBA Store in New York City, NBAStore.com and NBA team shops.

As part of this season's celebration, which will tip off Dec. 2 with the Cleveland Cavaliers honoring the franchise's 40th anniversary, seven teams will relive the history of basketball in each city by wearing uniforms from adidas that represent various  decades of the NBA’s history. Marketing support will include special ceremonies, in-arena entertainment and promotions. The teams are the Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors and Utah Jazz.

NBA Hardwood Classics Nights will run through March 31, 2010, featuring 62 games, with 19 televised on ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV.

The NBA initiated a version of Hardwood Classic Nights during the 2001-02 season when the Los Angeles Lakers honored their Minneapolis roots with a special ceremony, banner unveiling, attendance by Minneapolis legends including George Mikan and retro uniforms. In 2002-03, eight teams hosted NBA Hardwood Classics Nights games, and that expanded to 12 teams in 2003-04. It has been an annual event since then.

In addition to the retro jerseys worn by each team participating in the NBA’s 2009-10 Hardwood Classics Nights program, the Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks and the Lakers will be wearing a special anniversary jacket on court during Heritage Week, Feb. 21-28, 2010. The anniversary jacket features commemorative patches representing each championship won by that team. Hardwood Classics Nights.

Highlights of the 2009-10 Hardwood Classic Nights schedule include:

• The Warriors will celebrate their history in San Francisco by wearing the 1963-64 San Francisco Warriors home uniform.

• The Timberwolves and the Magic will both celebrate their 20th anniversaries by wearing their respective inaugural 1989-90 road uniforms.

• The Cavaliers will celebrate their 40th anniversary by wearing the same uniform the team wore during the 1988-89 season.

• The Trail Blazers will wear road uniforms from their 1976-77 championship season and will celebrate their 40th anniversary.

• The Raptors will celebrate the history of basketball in Toronto by wearing uniforms from the Toronto Huskies 1946-47 season.

• The Jazz will celebrate their 30th anniversary by wearing their 1979-1980 road uniforms marking the first year they played in Utah.
