NBA Builds Its Sports Betting Platform, Operations With U.S. Data Partnerships

By Barry Janoff

November 28, 2018: The NBA, which already has a deal with MGM Resorts International as its official gaming partner and has been at the forefront of enabling legal sports betting in the U.S., has now signed its first betting data partnerships.

Beginning with the current season, Sportradar and Genius Sports will have the non-exclusive rights to distribute official NBA betting data to licensed sports betting operators in the U.S.

According to the NBA, “As more states legalize sports betting, Genius Sports and Sportradar will work closely with the NBA to ensure those who choose to bet on sports legally have access to official NBA betting data through licensed gaming operators in their respective states.”

This would include official betting data for all NBA and WNBA games, including the pre-season, regular season and playoffs.

Along with official NBA betting data, each company will also be authorized to distribute betting data products on a real-time basis to licensed sports betting operators and platform providers.

Financial terms of the deals were not shared.

“Sportradar and Genius Sports are proven leaders in data distribution and will deliver unparalleled, real-time official NBA betting data,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said via the league.

“As the sports betting landscape continues to evolve at a rapid pace, these new partnerships will provide robust and reliable data to ensure the best possible gaming experience for our fans in the U.S.”

The Supreme Court in May overturned the national law preventing legal betting on sports in individual states, with each state now deciding whether or not to allow the platform.

States that currently allow legal sports betting are Delaware, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. Others have bills waiting to be passed or rejected.

According to the American Gaming Assn., annual revenue for the NBA could increase by nearly $600 million due to legal sports betting, including $160 million from spending by betting operators and data providers and $78 million from sponsorship revenue.

Sportradar is a leading global provider of sports data intelligence. In addition to the NBA, it serves as an official partner for the NFL, NHL, Nascar, FIFA and UEFA.

The company said it monitors and delivers insights from more than 400,000 matches annually across 60 sports categories,

Genius Sports is the global leader in sports data and works with the NCAA, MLB, PGA Tour and the Premier League.

According to Carsten Koerl, CEO for Sportradar, “We are excited to continue working with the NBA on this multi-faceted partnership that now also covers the U.S.  We have invested in this partnership as it is not only a tremendous opportunity for us, but ultimately for the fans of the NBA.

“With sports betting being so new to the United States, we will look to utilize our vast global experience in the space to implement innovative feeds and products to give fans and partners an amazing experience,” said Koerl.
