Phoenix Suns Join NBA Mass Movement, Sign PayPal To Jersey Ad, Marketing Pact

By Barry Janoff

October 2, 2018: Calling it a “first-of-its-kind global partnership built on elevating fan experiences through innovation,” the NBA’s Phoenix Suns have signed a multi-year alliance naming PayPal as its jersey ad patch partner and the team’s “official payment partner.”

Financial terms of the alliance were not shared. Previous NBA logo deals are averaging $9 million, according to industry analysts.

The Suns become the 25th NBA franchise with a jersey logo deal under the league’s three-year trial, which began last season.

The teams currently without jersey ad deals include the Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Washington Wizards,

“In an increasingly digital and mobile world, there’s no better teammate for this extensive partnership than an innovative industry leader like PayPal,” Jason Rowley, Suns president and CEO, said via the team.

“It was important for us to partner with an organization that had a strong local presence in the Valley and demonstrated a shared commitment to positively impacting our community.”

Rowley said that through this partnership, the team would “utilize PayPal’s leadership and expertise in technology and innovation to help create a better experience for our fans at home and around the globe.”

PayPal, founded in 1998, is based in San Jose, Calif.

In addition to the Suns, PayPal will also be designated the official payment partner for the WNBA Phoenix Mercury and Real Club Deportiva Mallorca, which is owned by Suns managing partner Robert Sarver.

According to the team, PayPal will be a payment option at its home venue Talking Stick Resort Arena point of sale terminals and at the Suns Team Shop in the arena. People will be able to access PayPal through the Official Suns Mobile App.

In addition, the Suns said they would make PayPal Credit available for Suns’ SixthMan members to purchase season tickets. PayPal Here card readers will be integrated at point of sale for chip, swipe, and tap payments, and fans will be able to pay with their Venmo balance throughout the arena.

Among the biggest NBA jersey ad deals to date, the Golden State Warriors jersey-logo pact with Rakuten is valued at $60 million over three years.

The Los Angeles Lakers signed with e-commerce firm Wish, a three-year deal that analysts put at $12-$14 million annually, similar in value to an alliance between the New York Knicks and SquareSpace.

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed with Goodyear for $30 million over three years. The Boston Celtics have a three-year deal with GE valued at $24 million.
