Nascar Makes Sense Out Of Change With New PNC Bank, Anheuser-Busch Deals

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

March 22, 2018: In what was the second major category change for racing circuit this month, Nascar has signed a deal naming PNC Bank the “official bank” and “official wealth management partner of Nascar.”

Pittsburgh, PA-based PNC Bank replaces in the category Bank of America, which has been the racing circuit’s official partner since 2007.

The agreement takes effect immediately. This is PNC Bank’s first alliance with a sports league.

Earlier this month, Nascar named Anheuser-Busch brand Busch as its official beer sponsor, replacing Coors Light, which had been Nascar’s official partner in the category since 2008.

Anheuser-Busch first sponsored the Pole Award in 1978 and was the sport’s “official beer” from 1988-1997.

Financial terms of the five-year deal with PNC Bank were not shared.

Under terms of the agreement, PNC gets exclusive status and promotional rights around retail, corporate and private banking across the country and U.S. military bases abroad.

PNC will be present at key Nascar races throughout each season and offer its services to the industry, providing valuable insights to drivers, teams, tracks and sponsors, according to Nascar.

According to PNC Bank, the move “signals another step in an ongoing effort to establish a stronger national PNC brand, even in markets without a retail branch presence.”

Since 2016, the bank has unveiled the opening of expansion markets “focused primarily on middle market corporate lending,” including Dallas-Ft. Worth, Kansas City, the Twin Cities, Nashville, Denver, Houston and the Port Cities market of Jacksonville, Savannah and Charleston.

Last year, PNC launched a national digital retail strategy.

According to William Demchak, PNC chairman, president and CEO, “As we continue to focus on establishing a more powerful national presence, PNC's new alliance with Nascar will open more avenues to build on our brand and business coast-to-coast.

“Nascar is a storied part of Americana that built a national fan base. Millions of Americans say they are Nascar fans, and so are we,” said Demchak.

Bank of America's involvement with racing dates back to the early 1980's when it began providing financing for motor speedways throughout the U.S.

In 2006, the financial firm became the title sponsor for what was then the Nascar Sprint Cup Series Chase race the Bank of America 500. and then the official bank of Nascar in 2007.

"PNC Bank has a trusted reputation and national reach and we couldn't be more pleased to welcome them to our family of partners," Steve Phelps, evp/chief global marketing, media and sales officer for Nascar, said in a statement.

"Like many blue-chip brands, we are thrilled PNC sees the value of the Nascar fan. I'm confident we'll deliver unique opportunities for PNC to connect with our industry and diverse fan base."

Prior to the alliance with Nascar, PNC was well established in sports and entertainment via naming rights to several venues.

They include MLB’s Pittsburgh Pirates PNC Park; PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC, home for the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes and the North Carolina State men's basketball team; PNC Field, home for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders AAA baseball team; and PNC Sports Complex in Emmitsburg, Md.; as well as the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel Township, NJ.

"PNC Bank has earned the reputation as a reliable and trusted financial institution with strong client relationships," Susan Schandel, svp and CFO for Nascar, said in a statement. "We look forward to leveraging their capabilities and technology solutions as they become Nascar's primary provider of banking services moving forward."

Nascar has also expanded its alliance with and use of Twitter, saying it would live-stream one in-car camera on Twitter for 15 Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series races during the second half of the 2018 racing season, including all ten Nascar playoffs races.

The Twitter live-stream (pictured) is scheduled to begin at the Daytona International Speedway during the Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series race on July 7.

Nascar will also stream an in-car camera on Twitter during regular season races at the road course at Watkins Glen International (Aug. 5), the night race at Bristol Motor Speedway (Aug. 18), the sport’s annual throwback event at Darlington Raceway (Sept. 2) and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Sept. 9).

The live camera stream can be accessed via Nascar’s official Twitter handle, @Nascar.

In addition, people can watch full broadcasts of these regular season and Nascar playoffs races on NBC or NBCSN, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

Nascar debuted the in-car camera live stream on Twitter during last year’s playoffs.

“We’ve created an experience that brings Twitter users inside the cars at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour,” Jill Gregory, svp and CMO for Nascar, said in a statement. “The live stream is yet another window into our sport that captures all the drama and intensity of Nascar racing — now available to fans for even more races in 2018.”
