Nascar Acquires ARCA To Develop Sport, Support Next Generation Of Drivers

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

April 27, 2018:
Nascar and the Automobile Racing Club of America have a multi-level relationship that dates back more than 60 years.

Now, ARCA is officially part of the Nascar universe with Nascar’s acquisition of the Toledo, Ohio-based racing circuit.

Financial terms were not released.

ARCA was founded in 1953 and began racing at Daytona International Speedway in 1964

Among other assets, ARCA “has provided a valuable platform for talented drivers looking to make it to Nascar’s national series,” according to Nascar.

“Our Nascar family has long had a special connection with our friends at ARCA, and this is a logical step in demonstrating our commitment to the next generation of racers,” Jim France, chairman and evp for Nascar, said during a media conference today in Talladega (Ala.) SuperSpeedway, site of this weekend’s Nascar and ARCA events. “Our business is racing and that’s what we’ve invested in.

“This continues the legacy our sport was built upon and will deliver the great racing our fans expect.”

Nascar and ARCA have shared teams and drivers “and that will continue in a major way,” said France.

The ARCA Racing Series will continue to operate under its current structure through the 2019 season and remain “as a free-standing organization,” according to France.

According to Ron Drager, ARCA president (and grandson of circuit founder John Marcum), “2020 and beyond is still a work in progress. For ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, we are always working on it, polishing it, trying to make it better, stronger. And that’s a big part of us joining Nascar.”

“The industry is stronger together than as individuals,” Drager said during the media conference.

Addressing the changing finances, challenges and logistics in the world of auto racing, Drager said that sometimes he and ARCA “feel like a little rowboat in the middle of an ocean and an ocean liner goes by and they rock the boat. And a big storm comes along and rocks the boat. So far we haven’t turned over.

“I want to be on a bigger boat,” he said, which drew laugher and applause from those at the media event.

This year’s schedule of 20 ARCA races includes nine events at Nascar national series venues, and three others at Nascar Whelen All-American Series tracks.

ARCA owns both the Toledo Speedway and Flat Rock Speedway.

“Taking the two leading groups in this area of motorsports and combining them, you will see a big boost in a lot of areas,” said France.

“We are proud of the history and tradition of the ARCA Racing Series and the relationship we’ve built over six decades with Nascar,” said Drager. “We look forward to the opportunity to be more fully integrated with Nascar and help shape the future of our sport.”
