MSG Co Puts ‘For Sale’ Sign On WNBA Liberty, Future In New York Uncertain

By Barry Janoff

November 14, 2017: The Madison Square Garden Co., describing itself as the “last original WNBA franchise owner,” said it intends to sell the New York Liberty.

“MSG is committed to identifying new ownership that will continue to grow the team, and is actively seeking a buyer to take over immediate operations of the franchise,” according to a statement from the company.

“We have been a strong and vocal advocate for the Liberty and the WNBA since the beginning,” James Dolan, executive chairman and CEO for The Madison Square Garden Co., said in a statement. “As the last original owner, I am proud of how far the league has come, and the role we have played in its growth.”

According to Dolan, “This was a difficult decision for us, which we made after carefully assessing the needs of our business. We are confident that new ownership can build on the foundation we established over these last 21 years, and steward this incredible franchise into an even more successful future.”

The Liberty play their home games in Madison Square Garden, owned by MSG Co. which also owns the NBA’s Knicks and NHL Rangers and such venues as New York’s Radio City Music Hall and The Beacon, The Forum in Los Angeles and the Chicago Theatre.

Although new ownership could relocate the franchise, MSG Co. made a case for keeping the team in New York.

“It is expected that new ownership will realize the benefits of having the team remain in New York,” MSG Co. said in a statement, pointing to “a commitment to the community that has won legions of loyal fans and with a home that is also the world’s largest media market.”

DraftKings has been the team’s jersey sponsor since 2016. NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas has been team president since 2015.

Last month, former WNBA star and long-time Liberty assistant coach Katie Smith was named the team's head coach, replacing Bill Laimbeer.

The Liberty traces its roots back to April 1996, when the WNBA was officially approved by the NBA Board of Governors.

The first WNBA game featured the Liberty playing the Los Angeles Sparks in Los Angeles on June 21, 1998, televised nationally on NBC.

The WNBA began with eight teams: the Liberty and three other teams in the Eastern Conference that have since folded: Charlotte Sting, Cleveland Rockers and Houston Comets.

The Western Conference included the Sparks, Phoenix Mercury, Sacramento Monarchs (since folded) and Utah Starzz (relocated to San Antonio in 2003, now relocating to Las Vegas for 2018).

Over the course of its history, the Liberty has qualified for the WNBA playoffs in 15 of its 21 seasons and has been to the WNBA finals four times.

“I would like to thank Isiah, and the Liberty players and coaching staff, who have made great progress in strengthening and growing the franchise,” said Dolan. “Under Isiah’s leadership, the team has broadened its roster of top sponsors, increased its passionate fanbase, and developed a solid team built for long-term competitiveness.

“The Liberty now presents a tremendous opportunity for a new owner to bring new resources, creativity and focus to ensure the team becomes an enduring success,” said Dolan.
