Hit Parade: MLB Plans To Rock ā€™nā€™ Roll During '19 All-Star Game In Cleveland

By Barry Janoff

August 7, 2018: In a nod to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, MLB has unveiled the logo for the 2019 All-Star Game presented by MasterCard and related merchandise that features an electric guitar as its main image.

The logo and merchandise were unveiled during a media conference today in Progressive Field, home to the Indians and the All-Star Game, scheduled for July 9, 2019.

That would be the sixth time Cleveland has hosted the event and the second All-Star game in Progressive Field, with the last game hosted there in 1997.

Progressive Field, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year, recently underwent upward of $600 million in renovations, according to industry analysts, including a new score board, seating and sound system, which helped MLB make its decision last month.

“On behalf of MLB commissioner (Rob) Manfred and everyone at Major League Baseball, we are really excited to bring the 90th All-Star Game to Cleveland and this iconic ball park,” said MLB deputy commissioner Tony Petitti during the media event,

“You can see from the logo what we are trying to do. We’ve already has meetings with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame about trying to integrate music. We try to do something iconic in each market, so music is what you can expect to hear and see.”

“Ready to rock with CLE? You know we are,” the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame posted to its Twitter account.

All-Star Game merchandise, including headwear, T-shirts and novelty items, are now officially for sale in Progressive Field retail stands and at MLB's online shop.

In 1997, current Indians first base coach and then Indians catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. hit a game-winning homer in Progressive Field and was named the game's MVP.

MLB and the Indians are eying the same type of excitement.

“If you go to the World Series, you and your staff get to be part of the game,” said Indians manager Terry Francona, who led the team into the 2016 World Series, won by the Chicago Cubs in seven games. “That would be really extra special for us personally. But the biggest thing is what it will do for the city of Cleveland.”

Petitti said that when MLB selects an All-Star Game host city, “it is about rotation, and it has been more than 20 years (for Cleveland). The Indians really stepped up and showed a lot of enthusiasm.

“When we bring an All-Star Game to a city it’s not just about what happens in the ball park, it’s about when happens throughout the city for five or six days.

According to Petitti, “The commissioner has given us a mandate about making each game bigger than the prior one. Washington (site of the 2018 All-Star Game last month) was pretty spectacular. I promise that  we can deliver the biggest and best All-Star Game to the city of Cleveland.”

The 2020 MLB All-Star Game presented by MasterCard is scheduled to be played at Dodger Stadium on July 14.
