MLB Bringing ‘Field Of Dreams’ Script To Life With 2020 Yankees-White Sox Game

By Barry Janoff

August 8, 2019: In a scenario of life imitating art, MLB said it would play a game next year on the field made legendary in the 1989 movie "Field of Dreams.”

The Chicago White Sox will host the New York Yankees on Thursday, Aug.13, 2020, in MLB at Field of Dreams presented by Geico, to air nationally on Fox from the Lansing Family Farm site in Dyersville, Iowa.

“This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn," the lead character, Ray Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner, says in the movie.

As another classic line in the film goes, “If you build it, he will come,” and the demand for tickets likely will be overwhelming.

But supply will be short.

MLB said it would begin construction next week on what would be a temporary 8,000-seat venue, and that information on ”limited ticket availability” would be shared later this year.

“As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular season game to the site of Field of Dreams,” commissioner Rob Manfred said via the league.

“We look forward to celebrating the movie’s enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.”

MLB said it would be the first MLB game in Iowa. Minor League Baseball has several teams in the state, including the Iowa Cubs, the Des Moines AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

A promo spot shows a pickup truck driving down the long road on the farm that leads to the ballfield, with billboards that read, “8/13/20. Yankees. White Sox.”

Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, playing the roll of Ray Liotta as “Shoeless” Joe Jackson in “Field of Dreams,” asks Costner, “Is this heaven?” “No,” says Costner as Kinsella in a clip from the film. “It’s Iowa.”

MLB did not indicate how much availability there would be for marketing partners or if stars from the movie would be involved.

As part of the work for the game, MLB said the configuration would pay homage to Comiskey Park — home of the White Sox from 1910-90 (including, of course, the infamous World Series Black Sox 1919 World Series scandal in which Jackson was involved) — such as the shape of the outfield and the bullpens beyond the centerfield fence.

People who attend the game will walk along a path through a cornfield leading to the field itself.

The rightfield wall will have windows to show the cornfields beyond.

According to Jerry Reinsdorf, chairman for the White Sox, “It seems very fitting that 30 years after the film’s debut, MLB will build a ballfield in an Iowa cornfield where we will come to play a game so that baseball fans can create their own memories to be cherished for decades."

MLB at Field of Dreams presented by Geico is part of a three-game series that will conclude over that weekend in the White Sox’ Guaranteed Rate Field.

The 1989 movie is based on W.P. Kinsella’s 1982 book, “Shoeless Joe.”

It was filmed on property much of which was owned by the Lansing Family and the rest by the neighboring Ameskamp Family.

In August 2007, Rita Ameskamp sold the land containing her family's portion of the ballfield to the Lansings.

In 2012, the Lansing Family Farm site was sold to group of investors, Go the Distance Baseball LLC, which still owns and maintains the site.

Nearly 6,000 people came to a Team of Dreams celebrity ball game in 2013.

During Father's Day 2014, the field was home to a series of events to commemorate the film’s 25th anniversary, including an exhibition game featuring Costner.

Since taking ownership, visitor traffic has increased from 65,000 to 100,000 visitors per year, according to Go the Distance.

The movie was directed by Phil Alden Robinson and starred Costner (Ray Kinsella), Amy Madigan (Annie Kinsella), James Earl Jones (Terence Mann), Liotta (“Shoeless” Joe Jackson) and Burt Lancaster (Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham).

“It’s a distinct honor for us to showcase our great game in such an iconic and intimate setting while promoting the movie’s legacy,” Hal Steinbrenner, Yankees managing general partner, said via the team.

“I fully expect that this experience will exemplify why baseball remains a cherished American pastime.”
