MLB Giving High-Tech Upgrade To Bullpen, Dugout, Replay, Communications

By Barry Janoff

February 26, 2018: In a move that MLB said would transform its call to the bullpen and other game-related situations into a “unified communications system featuring the latest technology across all 30 ballparks,” the league has signed a deal naming Mitel as its “official business technology and communications partner.”

Mitel’s primary task is to “transform the existing 30 independent platforms for dugout, bullpen, video review rooms and press box communications into a common, unified system featuring enhanced security and call recording capabilities.”

Financial terms of the multi-year pact were not shared.

MLB said the new system would provide the capability to record and monitor all communications conducted on the phone lines to ensure compliance with all MLB rules and regulations.

In addition to the ballpark phone migration effort, Mitel’s partnership with MLB designates the firm as the presenting sponsor for league-wide instant replay reviews.

Mitel, which already has alliances with teams including  the Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, said it has started to work with MLB and club technology departments to begin installations at all 30 ballparks.

The new systems and procedures are scheduled to be in place by Opening Day  – March 29, 2018 – the first time since 1968 that every team across the Majors will open on the same date, according to MLB.

“Mitel is a global leader in providing the kind of sophisticated, custom communications network that addresses the unique needs of Major League Baseball and our 30 clubs,” Chris Marinak, MLB evp-strategy, technology and innovation, said in a statement. “Mitel will provide a unified communications system featuring the latest technology across all 30 ballparks.  We are delighted to welcome them as a new league partner.”

The deal with Mitel follows recent new MLB alliances with Supercuts and Snapple.

In addition to MLB. Mitel has worked with such sports teams as the NBA’s Indiana Pacers and NHL Ottawa Senators.

According to  Rich McBee, CEO for Mitel, “Major League Baseball represents the highest standard of performance, and success in the game relies on effective communications.

“As MLB seeks to enhance the game experience for both current and future fans and participants, Mitel is privileged to help bring forward new technologies to improve collaboration.”

MLB was named a Top Ten Sports Marketer of the Year for 2017 by NYSportsJournalism.
