Reality Bites Manny: Ramirez Fading In NL ASG Voting

June 1, 2009: Last week, it seemed as if Manny Ramirez would be a member of the National League all-star team at the game in St. Louis this July. But in undated numbers Ramirez, currently serving a 50-game suspension for using a substance banned by MLB, has dropped from fourth to fifth among outfielders, although he still remains among the top ten NL players in votes with 635,530. Albert Pujois, first baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals, still leads all NL players with 1.24 million votes; Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley is the only other NL player to date with more than one million votes (1.1 million). In the outfield, Ramirez trails the Milwaukee Brewers Ryan Braun (908,745), Raul Ibanez of the Phillies (817, 849), Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs (775, 319) and the New York Mets Carlos Beltran (742,875). At this pace Ramirez would likely not make the team based on votes.

In the American League, the most recent numbers supplied by MLB show New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter as the top overall vote-getter (664,630), followed Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria (664,060). Unlike Ramirez, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez seems to have been hurt by recent ties to banned substances and his late arrival in the 2009 season due to hip surgery as he is third among AL third baseman with less than 250,000 votes.

Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times with the 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Online Ballot at MLB.com and all 30 club sites until July 2 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Starting rosters will be announced during the 2009 All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Chevrolet on TBS on July 5. Fans around the world will then be able to select the final player on each team via the 2009 "All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote" at MLB.com.
