• Showtime Sports will launch on Oct. 21 a weekly podcast, All The Smoke with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, in which the two NBA veterans (now retired) and NBA champs (Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs, respectively), will “deliver an authentic, unfiltered perspective on the most polarizing topics in and around the game of basketball.”  It will air Thursdays on the Showtime Basketball YouTube Channel.  

• Under Armour is making the spacesuits that Virgin Galactic astronauts — people who will pay upward of $250,000 for one of six seats — will wear on flights to the "edge of space."

• Bluberi Gaming has signed a deal with WWE to develop a series of licensed slot games featuring WWE Superstars and Legends. Among those to be featured include John Cena, Triple H, Becky Lynch, Roman Reigns and Ronda Rousey, along with such Legends as Hulk Hogan, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels. The first WWE series of slot games is scheduled to hit casinos October 2020.

• HarperCollins Publishers said it has acquired world rights to Back, the first memoir authored by Tiger Woods. According to Woods, “This book is my definitive story. It’s in my words and expresses my thoughts. It describes how I feel and what’s happened in my life.” A publication date was not given.

• Turner Sports’ eLeague has signed a deal with tech solutions and services provider CDW to “create enhanced fan experiences across eLeague’s properties on TV, digital, social and in-arena.” The alliance also names CDW an “official arena partner” for eLeague and the Rocket League Championship Series. • San Manuel Casino, under the auspices of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, has signed a deal to become a Founding Partner for Allegiant Stadium, scheduled to open at the home of the Raiders for the 2020 NFL season when the franchise relocates from Oakland to Las Vegas.

• Halloween this year is Oct. 31, and retailers, marketers and consumers are ready for another season of trick-or-treat. Total spend on Halloween 2019 is expected to reach $8.8 billion according to the National Retail Federation, Washington, DC. Full story here. 

• The Paley Center for Media, NY, will honor the 100th season of the NFL with a new exhibit: "A Century of Football: Celebrating the NFL’s 100th Season," free and open to the public (thru Oct. 27).

MLB Expands Mitel Alliance As Title Sponsor For Yankees-Red Sox London Series

November 19, 2019: In May, MLB unveiled a two-year deal to play regular season games in London, calling it “our most significant endeavor ever in Europe.”

Now, the 2019 London Series has a title sponsor, with MLB extending its alliance with Mitel to now include the U.K.

The two-game Mitel & MLB Present London Series 2019 between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox is scheduled for June 29-30 in London Stadium.

In its first year as MLB’s “official business technology and communications partner,” Mitel transformed the 30 MLB clubs’ independent platforms for dugout, bullpen, video review rooms and press box communications into a common, unified system featuring enhanced security and call recording capabilities.

In addition to this being the first MLB regular season games in Europe, it will also mark the first time the Red Sox and Yankees have played one another outside of New York or Boston, according to the Red Sox.

“With Mitel expanding its MLB partnership internationally, it tells us how successful this first season together was and how committed Mitel is to our sport,” Noah Garden, evp-commerce for MLB, said via the league.

“We’re proud to have Mitel deepen their involvement with MLB as part of an important league initiative like the landmark London Series. We’re excited about growing our partnership and, like our fans, can’t wait for next year’s games to begin.”

The current two-year deal includes another series in London in 2020, with participating teams to be determined, as well as “other initiatives that will aim to establish a footprint in the city.”

As part of the MLB-Mitel agreement this past season, Mitel was presenting partner of league-wide instant replay reviews. That integrated branding will extend through the London Series with in-stadium signage, digital exposure and replay technicians sporting Mitel and MLB marks on their apparel.

In addition, MLB said that Mitel’s creative marks would be featured throughout all ancillary events leading up to the London Series as well as “extensive brand exposure at MLB events during and in the lead-up to Mitel & MLB Present London Series 2020.”

This new pact between MLB and Mitel also allows for unique media integrations across digital and broadcast platforms — including MLB Network, MLB.com and the MLB At Bat app — in addition to any U.K.-based media partners that air the contests.

According to Rich McBee, Mitel president and CEO. “Our heritage runs deep across the U.K. and Europe, so the chance to help share the game of baseball at the highest level represents a truly unique opportunity for our customers, partners and employees.

“We look forward to establishing a world-class experience in partnership with MLB.”

The estimated capacity of London Stadium for the series will be 57,000.

In addition to its league-level deal, Mitel has partnerships and customer relationships with MLB teams including the Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers.
