Fear The Deer To Meet Democratic Donkey At DNC 2020 Milwaukee Convention

By Barry Janoff

March 11, 2019: Fiserv Forum opened in Milwaukee in August 2018 as the home for the NBA’s Bucks and the Marquette University Golden Eagles men’s basketball team.

In 2020, it will be the site for a different competition, with the Democratic National Committee selecting Milwaukee and Fiserv Forum to host the 2020 DNC National Convention.

Also in the running were Houston and Miami Beach.

“We’re thrilled that the 2020 Democratic National Convention will be held at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee,” Bucks president Peter Feigin said via the team.

“This selection is the result of an incredible collective effort to progress Milwaukee’s revitalization and status as a premier global destination.”

Fiserv Forum includes 17,500 seats for basketball and up to 18,000 for concerts, with 34 luxury suites and three clubs.

The cost of the venue was put at $524 million. Fiserv acquired naming rights for via a 20-year deal put at $300 million, according to industry analysts.

The arena is the centerpiece of a 30-acre business, residential, cultural and entertainment revitalization in the heart of downtown Milwaukee.

Founding Partners for Fiserv Forum include BMO Harris Bank, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, Johnson Controls and Miller Brewing Company.

According to Feign, “The state-of-the-art venue will offer best-in-class hospitality, technology and accessibility for the thousands of visitors coming to our city, making for a seamless experience throughout the entire event.

“We thank the Democratic National Committee for recognizing that Fiserv Forum and Milwaukee will provide the ideal setting for the Democratic National Convention.”

In addition to boosting the city’s profile nationwide and around the world, the Democratic National Convention will have a significant economic impact on Milwaukee.

The 2012 Democratic National Convention held in Charlotte, N.C., in September 2012 was called the “single largest event in the city’s history,” with an economic impact of $163.6 million according to local politicians, representatives and the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority.

The 2016 DNC in Philadelphia generated $230 million-plus in economic impact, according to the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee.

“We are a global brand, and we want to be the mouthpiece for Milwaukee around the world, and be the reason that people think about Milwaukee."

The Bucks, behind a “Fear the Deer” mantra, have risen to the top of the NBA ladder behind MVP candidate  Giannis Antetokounmpo, which may in some way have helped the city of Milwaukee to earn the DNC Convention.

“We are a global brand, and we want to be the mouthpiece for Milwaukee around the world, and be the reason that people think about Milwaukee,” Dustin Godsey, CMO for the Bucks, told NYSportsJournalism when the Bucks were named 2018 Grand Sports Marketer of the Year earlier this month.

“Of course, it helps to have a guy like Giannis, who over the past couple of years has blossomed into an international superstar.”

Fiserv Forum is also being considered by the NBA for a future All-Star Game, with the earliest open date February 2023.
