MiLB 2019 Attendance Tops 41.5M Behind Vegas Aviators, Copa de la DiversiĆ³n

By Barry Janoff

September 10, 2019: Led by the rebranded Las Vegas Aviators playing in their new Las Vegas Ballpark, and such league-wide initiatives as Copa de la Diversión and National Pride Celebration, MiLB said that 41,504,077 million fans attended games this season.

That is 1.05 million-plus fans more than in 2018 (40,450,337), and the 15th consecutive season that MiLB’s 176 teams in 15 leagues drew more than 40 million fans.

Average attendance across MilB was 4,044, up 2.1% over 2018.

The 2019 and 2018 totals are down from the record 43.2 million-plus in 2007 and more than 42.8 million in 2008, as well as from the 41,832,364 in 2017.

"Minor League Baseball continues to set the standard for affordable, family friendly entertainment,” Pat O'Conner, MiLB president & CEO, said via the league.

“And topping 41.5 million in attendance is only possible with the tremendous support our teams receive in each of our communities, from those in major metropolitan cities to those in small town America.”

According to MiLB, 81% of people in America live in market with a MiLB club.

The Triple-A Aviators, an affiliate of MLB’s Oakland A’s, led all teams in total (650,934) and average attendance (9,299),

The Frisco (Texas) RoughRiders, which play in Dr Pepper Ballpark, led the Double-A level for the 15th consecutive season (455,765), the Dayton (Ohio) Dragons (545,108) led the Class-A level and the Vancouver Canadians (235,980) topped the Short Season and Rookie level leagues.

Eight leagues saw total attendance increases in 2019: Appalachian (5.5%), Carolina (6.2%), Mexican (22.4 %), Northwest (2.4%), Pacific Coast (1.2%), Pioneer (18.8%, South Atlantic (2.5%) and Texas League (4.3%).

Nine teams set single-game stadium attendance records in 2019 (Clearwater, Durham, Fort Wayne, Great Lakes, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, Omaha, Pulaski and Richmond); while 13 teams set franchise records for single-season attendance in their current ballparks.

In addition to Las Vegas (pictured), new ballparks  opened in Amarillo, Texas, and Fayetteville, North Carolina,

In 2020, new stadiums are scheduled to open in Wichita, Kansas; Madison, Alabama; and Kannapolis, North Carolina.

Following an initial league-wide effort in 2018 that resulted in “dramatic increases in attendance, merchandise sales and commercial partnership revenue,” the second league-wide activation of Copa de la Diversión (Fun Cup) in 2019 season saw an increase from 33 to 72 teams.

They transformed their brands to join in Copa's mission to “authentically connect MiLB teams with their diverse communities, and embrace and celebrate the culture and values that resonate most with Latinx fans nationwide.”

More than 78% of all dates during MiLB's season — 397 games — featured at least one Copa-designated game.

According to MiLB, more than 18 million U.S. Hispanics designate themselves as fans of MiLB, behind only the NBA and MLS.

"The growth we're seeing in team participation for Copa is outstanding," said MiLB.

In June, calling it the “largest documented Pride celebration in professional sports,” the league launched MiLB Pride, part of the organization's diversity and inclusion initiative.

Some 70 MiLB teams hosted Pride LGBTQ-themed nights or events this season, incorporating Pride into scheduled promotions, providing discounted tickets to LGBTQ organizations and/or engaging with the LGBTQ community both in the ballpark and beyond.

A national platform included teams forming partnerships with more than 150 local LGBTQ organizations.

"Minor League Baseball stadiums have always been and will continue to be safe and welcoming places for all  people,”  said O'Conner.

The Dayton Dragons' streak of consecutive sellouts, which began in 2000, is now at 1,385 games, the longest in pro sports history, according to MiLB.

The Aviators (formerly known as the Las Vegas 51's — for Area 51 in Nevada — complete with an alien-head logo) recorded 43 sellouts in their inaugural season.

Ballpark Digest named Las Vegas Ballpark the "2019 MiLB Triple-A Best of the Ballparks."

Howard Hughes Corp. owns the team and developed and oversees the ballpark and surrounding Summerlin community.

According to  O'Conner, "To see the Appalachian and Pioneer Leagues have those increases without the benefit of new ballparks shows what they mean to their communities.

“It is also a testament to the support of our loyal fans and the dedication of our front office staffs across the country and their commitment to making Minor League Baseball the summertime destination for memory making fun and excitement."

The 2020 MiLB season is scheduled to open on April 9.
