Rory McIlroy Joins With NBC’s Golf Channel To Launch Streaming Platform GolfPass

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

February 5, 2019:
Top-ranked golfer Rory McIlroy has joined with NBC Sports’ network Golf Channel to unveil GolfPass, a streaming platform that will feature instruction videos, past tournaments, podcasts and amenities for golfers.

The deal follows one among Tiger Woods, Discovery Inc. and the PGA Tour, which in November launched GolfTV, which also offers similar videos and options for golfers.

GolfTV is not currently available in the U.S.

NBC Sports said GolfPass, which launched in the U.S. and will soon be available in the U.K., has been in development for two years. McIlroy was called a “founder.”

McIlroy will provide such elements as instruction and information videos and host a monthly podcast, as well as assist in marketing.

“Golf has been a constant in my life, a passion I share with millions of others,” McIlroy said via the network.

“This collaboration between NBC Sports and Rory McIlroy Inc. on GolfPass is driven by my desire to enrich the game’s experience for golfers all over the world.”

According to McIlroy, “Arnold Palmer showed tremendous vision when founding Golf Channel in 1995 and I’m thrilled with the prospect of helping to lead the game further into the digital era with GolfPass and additional NBC Sports partnerships that help make golf more accessible and fun.”

The site itself offers, “The best of golf. One convenient membership. Starting at $9.99 a month.”

NBC Sports said that GolfPass benefits are centered on five pillars, which are the most frequent ways golfers engage in the sport: Play, Learn, Watch, Shop, Travel.

NBC Sports said that GolfPass has some more than 400 hours of instructional videos filmed on golf courses worldwide and library of 1,000 hours of tournament footage and behind-the-scenes footage both on and off the course.

Subscribers will be offered such amenities as free rounds of golf, free golf balls and discounts on travel, tournament fees and equipment.

“GolfPass is built upon NBC Sports’ robust portfolio of lifestyle brands, technology and expertise that connect golfers with their passion,” Mike McCarley, president, Golf, NBC Sports, said via the network.

“We partnered with Rory McIlroy on GolfPass not only because of his reputation as an approachable, genuine and global ambassador for golf, but also to harness his eagerness to modernize how golfers engage with the sport in their daily lives – whether watching a screen or with a club in their hand.”

McIlroy’s marketing partners also include Nike, Optum, Omega and TaylorMade.
