Evan Longoria Gets Gets Leadoff Spot For 2K Sports' 'Major League Baseball 2K10'

November 25, 2009: Although he usually bats in the heart of the order, 2K Sports said that Evan Longoria, third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays, will now lead off as the cover athlete and spokesman for Major League Baseball 2K10. The videogame will be available in Spring 2010, preceded by marketing support that will include TV, print, Internet and experiential.

And while Longoria has been tapped to appear on the cover, the specific photo itself will be decided by consumer vote. Beginning Nov. 24 and running through Dec. 8, visitors to www.2Ksports.com/vote will have six options from which to choose. The final box cover for Major League Baseball 2K10 will be unveiled Dec. 11. (Full details here).

“When it comes to selecting cover athletes for our games, we look for players who are more than just a fancy resume,” Greg Thomas, svp-sports development for 2K, said in a statement. “With Evan, he is one of the most fun and exciting players in the game, which helps complement the vibe we are striving for with Major League Baseball 2K10.”

2K Sports is also teaming with Fathead to give away a limited number of Fathead Jr. wall graphics (MSRP $49.99). Eligible consumers who purchase specially marked copies of Major League Baseball 2K10 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii at participating retailers may redeem a unique retail code at www.Fathead.com while supplies last.

“It’s been a milestone year for me, from winning a Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger Award, to now being selected as the cover athlete for Major League Baseball 2K10 – this has been a truly humbling experience,”  Longoria said in a statement. “Since 2K Sports is letting fans decide on the final box cover art, I’m going to have to rally my Rays teammates to ensure that my favorite takes the lead.”

Longoria was the 2008 American League Rookie of the Year when the Rays won the AL title before losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. This past season, he batted .281, with 33 home runs, 113 RBI’s and 100 runs scored; won a Gold Glove and also a Silver Slugger Award presented by Louisville Slugger, given annually to the best offensive player at each position as determined by MLB coaches and managers.

The videogame will be available for the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Windows PC.
