London 2012 Olympic Games Is Big Business For Sports, Business 

November 8, 2009: With the 2012 Summer Olympics less than 1,000 days away, the Olympic Delivery Authority released a list of about 1,500 companies that are currently working with, and benefiting from, the organizing committee for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games expanded upon that,  saying about £6 billion ($9.96 billion U.S) worth of work would be available during the lifetime of the project. The committee estimated that 75,000 companies throughout the UK "will win London 2012-related work over the lifetime of the project."

LOCOG is beginning its Games-time procurement process this year, including the construction of temporary venues and buying more than 900,000 pieces of sporting equipment.

British Airways, a Tier One partner, celebrates the London 2012 Olympics."We often talk about the Games heralding a golden decade of sport and I believe that this could be matched by a golden decade of sport-related business,"  Sebastian Coe, chairman of the LOCOG, said in a statement. "We want the Games to be a triumph for Britain – at the finish line and the bottom line . . . With less than three years to go, we’re starting the procurement process for everything we need to stage a memorable Games. The scope of this is potentially massive - from sporting equipment to catering services and beyond."

Coe said that LOCOG will tender around £700 million ($1.16 billion U.S.) worth of goods and services for the staging of the Games, which includes facilities management, catering, production services for Ceremonies and technology.

"Thousands of companies across the UK are winning contracts and helping to build the venues and infrastructure needed for the London 2012 Games," John Armitt, ODA chairman, said in a statement.

The companies range from those that have and are supplying building materials for the Olympic venues and surrounding environs and roadways to those that are supplying cleaning services, plants and other products that make up London 2012's Green Strategy.

Two companies that have already benefited from working for the ODA on the design and planning of the Olympic Park are Atkins (engineering) and Populous (architects), which have gone on to become London 2012 suppliers now working with the LOCOG to stage the Games in 2012.

LOCOG has six domestic Tier One Partners: adidas, BP, British Airways, BT, EDF and Lloyds TSB.

There are now six domestic Tier Two Supporters: Adecco, Cadbury, Cisco, Deloitte, Thomas Cook and UPS.

There are 11 domestic Tier Three Suppliers and Providers: Airwave, Atkins, Boston Consulting Group, Crystal CG, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, Holiday Inn, McCann Worldgroup, Nielsen Company, Populous, Ticketmaster and Trident.

Worldwide Olympic Partners signed up for London 2012 are Coca-Cola, Acer, Atos Origin, GE, McDonald’s, Omega, Panasonic, Samsung and Visa.
