Chicago 2016 Likes The Sound Of Lollapalooza Music

July 20, 2009: What do Kings of Leon, Tool, Snoop Dogg, The Killers, Jane's Addiction Depeche Mode and Perry Farrell have to do with the bid to bring the 2016 Olympics to Chicago. Everything, at least from Aug. 7-9, when the Lollapalooza tour, featuring the aforementioned headliners and dozens of other musicians, hits Chicago.

According to Chicago 2016, the organization heading Chicago's bid, Lollapalooza has named one of its two Presenting Stages the “Chicago 2016 Stage” in an effort to support the city’s bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Lollapalooza will be held in Grant Park, which also would be part of the Olympic Games logistics should the city win the bid. Among the sponsors supporting the Lollapalooza tour are adidas, State Farm, Citi, Honda and Budweiser.

“As a part of the Chicago community, we felt it was important to elevate the presence of Chicago 2016 at Lollapalooza, and there is no better way to show our support than naming rights to one of our premier stages,” Charlie Jones, executive producer of C3 Presents, which is producing the Lollapalooza tour along with Farrell, said in a statement. “Lollapalooza and C3 Presents want to help keep the bid front and center, and do our part to help bring the 2016 Games to Chicago.”

Chicago 2016 was on-site at Lollapalooza in 2008 to build awareness and to recruit volunteers. This year, with Chicago among the final four cities seeking to host the 2016 Summer Games, the effort has been ramped up. The International Olympic Committee with name the host city the October from among Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro.


“We are excited to be a part of such a large music festival in Chicago and honored to have one of the main stages named after our bid,” Patrick Ryan, Chicago 2016 chairman and CEO, said in a statement . “Grant Park is an ideal location for events and that is why it is a central part of our plan to celebrate the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
