LeBron, Giannis Extend Leads In All-Star Game Fan Voting, Eye Captain Roles

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

January 10, 2019: The Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks have expanded their conference leads in the second returns of fan votes of NBA All-Star Voting 2019 presented by Google.

James leads all players with 2,779,812 followed by Antetokounmpo with 2,670,816.

If the trend continues through final votes on Jan. 21, James and Antetokounmpo would be team captains for the Western and Eastern Conferences, respectively.

Fans account for 50% of the vote, all current NBA players and a media panel each account for 25% of the vote to determine the ten starters.

The 68th NBA All-Star Game will take place in Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., on Feb. 17  (TNT,  8 PM. ET).

The leaders to date behind James and Antetokounmpo with more than one million votes each are:

• Kyrie Irving (Boston Celtics 2,381,901)

• Luka Dončić (Dallas Mavericks 2,220,077)

• Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors 2,094,158)

• Kawhi Leonard (Toronto Raptors 2,092,806)

• Derrick Rose (Minnesota Timberwolves 1,986,840)

• Paul George (Oklahoma City Thunder 1,859,216)

• Kevin Durant (Warriors, 1,717,968)

• Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers, 1,710,229)

• James Harden (Houston Rockets 1,674,660)

• Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans 1,564,347)

• Russell Westbrook (Thunder 1,494,382)

• Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat 1,199,789)

The two team captains will draft rosters from the pool of players voted as starters and reserves in each conference, making their picks regardless of conference affiliation.

The draft will be televised, with details to come from the NBA.

TNT will reveal the NBA All-Star Game starters, including the two captains, on Jan. 24 during TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by Autotrader, featuring Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith.

The network will name the reserves, as selected by NBA head coaches, on Jan. 31 during TNT NBA Tip-Off.
