Iconic L.A. Coliseum Gets United Airlines $69M Name To Go With $270M Renovation

By Barry Janoff

January 29, 2018: The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, located at 3911 South Figueroa Street, opened on May 1, 1923, and has had the same name ever since.

Beginning in 2019, as the venue celebrates its 96th birthday, the long-time home to the University of Southern California football tich moved in the year it opened — and also currently to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, will have a new name.

United Airlines has signed the first naming rights deal in the Coliseum’s history, a 16-year pact valued at $69 million, that will change the stadium to the United Airlines Memorial Coliseum beginning in August 2019.

The naming rights deal coincides with a $270 million renovation that began earlier this month.

The pact was signed with USC, which operates the Coliseum under a 98-year-lease with the city, county and state that began in 2013.

The lease includes provisions to secure naming rights to help underwrite the restoration.

“United has been a part of the Los Angeles community for more than 80 years,” Janet Lamkin, president-California for United Airlines, said in a statement.

“Sponsoring the Memorial Coliseum, an athletic and architectural icon, as well as USC, an intellectual and cultural beacon, reaffirms our broader commitment to serving the people, communities and business of this region.”

According to Lamkin, “These investments to renovate and improve the stadium, as well as to sponsor the USC Trojans as they pursue excellence on and off the field, reinforce our overall investment in this vital market, while enhancing United’s brand presence outside of the airport in one of the nation’s largest cities.”

The airline also has naming rights to United Center in Chicago, home to the NBA’s Bulls and NHL’s Blackhawks.

The Coliseum has hosted more than 4,500 events and some 118 million people since 1923, according to USC.

It was originally commissioned as a memorial to honor Los Angeles World War I veterans, then rededicated in 1968, the 50th anniversary of the Armistice, to include all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War I.

The stadium, which was declared a state and national historic landmark in 1984, is scheduled to host some key events after it officially becomes United Airlines Memorial Coliseum, including the final season there for the Rams before the team moves into its $2.66 billion stadium now under construction in Inglewood.

In 2028, it will play a major role in the Los Angeles Summer Olympics, hosting competitions and the closing ceremony. That will mark a record third time one venue has hosted three different Olympic events, with 2028 joining the 1932 and 1984 Summer Games.

The Coliseum has also been the site for three Los Angeles Dodgers World Series games in 1959.

It also was the site for Super Bowl I in January 1967 and Super Bowl VII in 1973.

“Our shared purpose as an airline is to connect people and help unite the world,” said Lamkin.

“From now on, the United Airlines Memorial Coliseum will be a symbol of that mission.”
