• After two exclusive games on NFL Network, Fox Sports’ 2019 Thursday Night Football presented by Bud Light Platinum schedule begins Sept. 26 with the Philadelphia Eagles at the Green Bay Packers. Fox Sports said it would deliver Thursday Night Football in 4K Ultra High Definition for the NFL’s 100th season, making Thursday night match-ups available through the Fox Sports and Fox Now apps, via Apple TV 4K and select Roku devices. • Tony Wyllie has been named regional president and managing director for Special Olympics North America. Wyllie most recently was svp-communications for the NFL’s Washington Redskins since 2010. His three-decade career also includes PR/communications with the St. Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans.

According to Wyllie, “I will use my leadership skills and experience to continue to deliver high-quality competitive sports experiences, attract more resources, and build awareness of Special Olympics. I am excited to work for the six million Special Olympics athletes and Unified Partners in the movement for inclusion."

• The Los Angeles Clippers have signed a deal with Los Angeles-based tech firm Honey, which includes naming rights to team's renovated Honey Training Center: Home of the L.A. Clippers and its logo on team practice jerseys. According to Honey, "Ten million-plus members worldwide use Honey's suite of free tools daily to save time and money when shopping online.”

• SoFi Stadium, which will be the new $6 billion home venue for the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers beginning in 2020, will open July 25-26 with two Taylor Swift concerts.

• The Paley Center for Media, NY, will honor the 100th season of the NFL with a new exhibit: "A Century of Football: Celebrating the NFL’s 100th Season," free and open to the public (Sept. 14-Oct. 27), which includes the first public screening of the only known complete broadcast of Super Bowl I (then known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game) in January 1967 between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs

• Pete Frates and Pat Quinn, co-founders of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, have launched with The ALS Assn. the 5th anniversary of “Challenge Me” with a “new call to action to reignite the passion and generosity of the millions of people who dumped ice water on their heads in the summer of 2014.”

Kobe Bryant’s New Teammates: Spielberg, Oprah, J.J. Abrams, Ron Howard

April 11, 2018: During his 20-year career in the NBA, Kobe Bryant was able to work with, play against and learn from some of the best of the best players in the game, including Shaquille O’Neal, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki.

Now, as an Academy Award-winner for his Dear Basketball animated short based on his own poem;  writer, producer and host of Detail, a 15-episode basketball analysis program debuting this week on ESPN+; and head of multi-media content creation company Granity Studios, Bryant gets to work with the best of the best in his new chosen industry.

Now part of Bryant’s roster of associates and mentors: “J.J. Abrams, George R.R. Martin, Oprah Winfrey, Shonda Rhimes, Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard,” he said.

Ron Howard and I had dinner about a week ago. We spent about an hour and a half talking about film and process, all this other stuff,” Bryant said during a media conference call Wednesday to discuss his Detail project.

“As a player I always wanted to learn from the best players in the game,” said Bryant. “Absolutely, man. I’ve been a sponge my whole career. It’s certainly not going to stop now.”

According to Bryant, his Dear Basketball project would not have been nearly as successful — it earned an Emmy as well as as Oscar — without animator Glen Keane and John Williams, the latter the multi-awarding winning composer of such film scores as Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. and Harry Potter films.

Given that he played his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers and was constantly in touching distance of Hollywood A-Listers, does Bryant feel star-struck being in the presence of movie’s elite directors and writers, or do they seem star-struck being with him?

“They (might) say, 'Wow, I’m sitting here with Kobe,'” Bryant laughed. “(But) are you shitting me? I’m sitting with Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard! Sitting at Pixar talking with Pete Docter, Brad Bird! They’re telling me how wonderful basketball is, how did you write this thing.”

For Bryant, as important as their time, friendship and advice are their opinions of his work.

“I know they don’t play around,” he said during the media call. “If they don’t like something, they are cut and dry, they’ll tell you to your face the film was a piece of shit, here is why, here is how you can do it better.

“For them to sit here saying, We love this film, it was excellent, that was the greatest thing ever. When you’re siting with Pete Docter, Brad Bird, Lee (Unkrich), who just won an Academy Award for Coco, that’s priceless.”

Detail will feature Bryant’s veteran analysis and insights as he watches film and breaks down games and plays throughout the 2018 NBA playoffs and Finals.

A special premiere edition of Detail on April 12 — the inaugural day of ESPN+  — will see Bryant analyzing Game 6 of the 2009 Western Conference Finals when Bryant scored 35 points and has ten assists as the Lakers clinched their second consecutive NBA Finals en route to winning the championship.

The second episode of Detail will be available on ESPN+ April 15 – the day following a NBA playoffs Round 1 Game 1.
 
Detail will air exclusively on ESPN+, the new direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service from Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International in partnership with ESPN.

American Express will be the official launch sponsor of ESPN+.

For those who might think that the notoriously intense preparation and competitiveness that Bryant put into his NBA career, which yielded five NBA championships, might somehow wane in his new career, think again.

“This is where me and Michael (Jordan) differ a lot,” said Bryant. “When I was going through the process of retirement, I think people were kind of assuming Michael and I behave the same way from a competitive standpoint. We’re both ridiculously competitive, but it’s different to a point, right?

“I have this other thing that is calling me that I enjoy doing. I’m completely focused on that. I can watch a game, feel nothing at all. There’s no angst, there’s no, Man, I want to get back out there. There’s literally zero of that.”

According to Bryant, “Now when I watch the game, I watch it from the perspective that I’m looking at things that are happening, things that my mind can process from years and years of studying film. But now I’m just taking that information and applying it in artful way to the show Detail.”

Bryant said that in many ways he is back in his early years as a NBA player, having to prove himself to the established creative people who move and shape entertainment.

“The important thing for me is to establish myself within this industry as a serious creator. I mean, I can write. I can edit. I can produce. I can do those things at a serious level. It’s not something that’s kind of a one-time passion sort of thing. It’s just something that we do every single day.

“Winning an Academy Award certainly helps with that, right? It wasn’t something that I just attached my name to as an executive producer, which most people tend to do. This is something I gave birth do. This is something I actually wrote. This is something that I went out and called Glen and got Glen onboard. Called John, got John or board, worked with that vision," he said.

“It feels good to be able to have that recognition in that way.”

“They (might) say, 'Wow, I’m sitting here with Kobe,'” Bryant laughed. “(But) are you shitting me? I’m sitting with Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard!"

As to where he keeps his Oscar.

"I have it in my house. It’s sitting right next to the Emmy award we’ve won, as well. I look at them every morning before I go to work.”

In talking about other NBA stars who have transitioned to media, Bryant said his path differs from the likes of former teammate O’Neal and Charles Barkley, both of whom are analysts for Turner Sports.

“I love coming to the office writing, editing, creating. Building a studio is no small task. It’s all encompassing. I just don’t have the time to sit at a studio and do that," he said.

“If that was my passion, to be able to sit at a studio desk, do that day in, day out, I would certainly do it. That’s not my passion. My passion is writing, creating, putting beautiful stories together, weaving them in the form of a narrative. That’s what you’ll see in Detail.

ESPN said that Bryant would deliver multiple episodes of Detail on ESPN+ during the first two rounds of the NBA Playoffs, leading into a heavier schedule of shows during the NBA Eastern Conference Finals (three) and the NBA Finals (up to seven).

“It’s hard to explain until you see it,” said Bryant. “Yes, it’s a basketball analysis show. But the way it’s woven together, you’ll actually see the natural narratives that are there in a playoff series. We just kind of bring those to the light in terms of how it actually affects the outcome of plays and a series.”

“I haven’t completely struggled watching playoffs. I’d be going crazy, dude. So fortunate enough for me, like, I’ve really been able to move on from the game.”

Bryant was genuinely enthusiastic in describing his new post-NBA career.

“I follow my passion, things that I love to do, like writing and storytelling,” he said. “I enjoy that. I don’t find myself having to remind myself to work hard and push myself to stay on top of things because I just love doing it. I can’t wait to get to the studio every day, work with the team, write, create, concept, develop. I just enjoy doing that.

“I don’t really look at it so much as reinvention as my career as a basketball player was over. I loved storytelling, so here I am.”
