LG Hires Jason Statham To Play All Roles In Global Marketing For G5 Smartphone

By Barry Janoff

March 30, 2016: He's the title star of Transporter and has had high-fueled roles in films including Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, The Expendables, Death Race, Killer Elite and Parker.

Now, Jason Statham gets to play every role in an upcoming multi-platform global campaign from LG Electronics to support its G5 modular smartphone.

According to LG, the spot with Statham, via Energy BBDO, will show the actor "experiencing the LG G5 in exciting and fun ways. Every character in the commercial is portrayed by Mr. Statham, an amusing mise-en-scène consistent with the G5's 'Life's Good When You Play More' tagline."

Of course, there are explosions, a car chase, bullets flying and, in a side not usually seen, some dance moves from the star in "Play Begins."

LG said the spot, breaking April 1, highlights the "fun and playful experiences possible with the LG G5 and its versatile Modular Type design. With the ability to attach various companion devices that can transform the smartphone into an easy-grip camera, the LG G5 is perfect for anyone who appreciates great technology and innovation that improves lives. (See a teaser spot here.)

As part of its multi-media push, the spot will air in such key markets including North America, Latin America, Europe and East Asia; and also will cover social media including YouTube and Facebook.

"Since its unveiling at (the 2016 Mobile World Congress), we've heard from many who say they've been waiting for a phone like the G5," Chris Yie, vp and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications, said in a statement.

"With the G5, our intention is to show how smartphones can go beyond just being a communication device and deliver a playful mobile experience that can enrich our lives," said Yie.

"I think the concept that LG is putting forward with the G5 and its modular design is going to catch on with consumers," Statham said of the spot, which was shot in Los Angeles and directed by Fredrik Bond. "I enjoyed partnering with LG and working on this commercial, so I hope that shows through in the final piece."
