Guinness Going To Great Heights To Find World's Tallest Woman

March 4, 2010: LeBron James is a big man in the NBA, and Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets is currently the tallest player at 7' 6". But neither comes close to claiming the Guinness Book of World Records' title of "Tallest Living Man" — Sultan Kosen of Turkey, who stands 8" 1"  — or "Tallest Man Ever." That would be Robert Wadlow of the U.S., who scrapped the sky at 8" 11".

Now, following their quest two years ago to find the Tallest Living Man, the people at Guinness want to find the next title holder for Tallest Living Woman. The winner will take over the honor held by American Sandy Allen, who at 7' 7 1/4" held the crown of "Tallest Living Woman"  from 1976 until she passed away in 2008. The woman who next claims the title might still fall short of claiming the crown of being the "Tallest Female Ever,"  Zeng Jinlian of China, who stood an imposing 8" 1 3/4", according to Guinness.

For the record, the NBA's list of tallest players ever is led by Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan, who both hit 7'7"; Margo Dydek is listed as the tallest player in WNBA history at 7'3".

According to Guinness, all legitimate contenders for the Tallest Living Woman title must be willing to be measured in person by an official Guinness World Records adjudicator. (Full details here.)  The winner will be part of the Guinness World Records 2011 edition.

"We have had remarkable success in the past with these record-breaking callouts. It's how we found the current world's tallest man – Sultan Kosen," Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, said in a statement. "The 'Tallest' category always brings out the most awe in people, and hopefully another amazing woman will step forward for measurement and claim the title."

Guinness said it is also searching for several new record holders in the pet division, including: Dog With the Longest Ears, Smallest Dog (Length), Oldest Dog, Smallest Cat (Length) and Shortest Cat. (Full details here.)
