EA Sports Enlists Wayne Gretzsky To Center Videogame Launch, 'NHL Slapshot'

Wayne Gretzky is back on the ice in EA Sports' 'NHL Slapshot' videogame.June 1, 2010: EA Sports is going back to the future for its first NHL hockey title for Nintendo's Wii Console, NHL Slapshot, selecting hockey legend and Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky as the game's cover athlete and marketing spokesman.

Gretzky will also be available as a playable character in the game when NHL Slapshot is available in retail stores this September.

Among other innovations, EA Sports said that NHL Slapshot would introduce a "revolutionary hockey stick controller that allows players to shoot, pass and body check just like the pros."

“EA Sports has been making great hockey games in Canada for 20 years now, and the team behind the game is really passionate about the sport,” Gretzky said in a statement. “Being on the cover of the new Wii version of the game is exciting and is probably going to make me a bit cooler in the eyes of my kids.”

Gretzky, earned the nickname "The Great One" during an NHL career that included more than 20 seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, currently holding 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records and six All-Star records. When he retired in 1999, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

According to David Littman, creative director for EA Sports, “Making our games as close to the real thing has always been our focus. Now we are giving players an actual plastic hockey stick that the Wii remote and Nunchuk controllers plug into. Players can then use the new NHL Slapshot hockey stick to do all the moves in the game.”
