Woods, Sorenstam, Nicklaus Urge IOC To Reinstate Golf As An Olympic Sport

April 14, 2009: A virtual Who's Who of golf from around the world, including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa and Vijay Singh, have signed personal letters attached to a detailed brochure from the International Golf Federation urging the International Olympic Committee to reinstate golf as an Olympic sport. The IOC will vote on reinstating two of seven sports into the Games this October. Golf has not been an Olympic sport since 1904 in St. Louis, U.S., when the U.S. and Canada were the only countries competing, according to the IGF. Nicklaus and Sorenstam were designated global ambassadors last year in support of the IGF’s bid to reinstate golf as an Olympic sport. In addition to Nicklaus, Sorentam, Woods, Ochoa, and Singh, the others who have signed letters are Karrie Webb, Mike Weir, Camilo Villegas, Gwladys Nocera, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Jeev Milkha Singh, Padraig Harrington, Ai Miyazato, K.J. Choi, Suzann Pettersen, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia and Yani Tseng. “It is imperative that the best players in the world support golf’s Olympic effort in order to give us the best chance of being selected by the IOC to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games,” Peter Dawson, joint secretary of the IGF, said in a statement. “It also is important for us to demonstrate the international nature of golf, underscoring the fact that 60 million people play the sport in nearly 120 countries. This personal outreach by international players is a continuation of that effort.” The sports being consideration for reinstatement are baseball, karate, roller sports, rugby sevens, softball and squash.
