Golden Oldie: Dan Marino Takes New Quarterback Role As AARP Spokesman

Special to NYSportsJournalism

April 23, 2012: Claiming that "age is really just a number," Dan Marino, the man who was a master of numbers during his NFL Hall of Fame career, has signed on to become the "men's life ambassador" for AARP, the non-profit group that works on behalf of 37 million people 50 and older.

Marino, who retired in 1999, turned 50 this past September. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

According to Washington, DC-based AARP, Marino will "share his point of view and expertise on a variety of men's interests including health, fitness, sports, lifestyle, entrepreneurship and community service."

As AARP's men's life ambassador, Marino said he would be making regular contributions to AARP's Web site, personal appearances and speaking at events and connecting with AARP's members through online chats and social media, including his own Twitter account.

"At the end of the day, age is really just a number and I want to help people — no matter what life stage they're in — realize that they can be healthy, stay fit, explore their interests and passions, and enjoy the many opportunities they have in life, in the years to come," Marino said in a statement. "AARP has a deep understanding and appreciation for the needs of Americans 50+ and . . . I'm looking forward to being a part of that effort."

Marino starred at the University of Pittsburgh before being dratted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round in 1983. His NFL career totals include more than 61,300 yards passing, 4,967 completions and 420 touchdowns. Marino joined CBS Sports in February 2002 and is a studio analyst for the CBS Television Network's NFL pre-game show, The NFL Today.

In 1992, Dan and his wife Claire Marino, who have six children, established the Dan Marino Foundation, to share their son Michael's story as advocates for children with autism. The Foundation has since raised more than $33 million.

According to Emilio Pardo, chief brand officer and evp for AARP, "Dan embodies what it means to be a 50+ man today: He's a caregiver, a business man, a philanthropist, a family man and he cares about himself and other men leading an active, healthy lifestyle. Having been personally committed to being an advocate for men's health and wellness for many years since retiring from the NFL, Dan's passion and versatile life experience make him the perfect choice to be our new men's life ambassador."
