Harlem Globetrotters Court Consumers With New Licensing Deal

October 21, 2009: The Harlem Globetrotters, stars of basketball courts worldwide, have hired Cookie Jar Group to become the exclusive global licensing agent and developer of kids television programming for the iconic team. The Globetrotters said they would "initially target fans [who] grew up with the Harlem Globetrotters" via a range of consumer products that would include vintage apparel and collectibles. Copyright Promotions Licensing Group, Cookie Jar Group’s licensing division, will also create a licensing program aimed at a new generation of fans that will feature sporting goods, trading cards and interactive games.

The team said that plans also include developing an animated TV series, which would harken back to the Globetrotters' animated show from the early 1970s created by Hanna-Barbera on CBS and then on NBC. Members of the Globetrotters currently are appearing on CBS's The Amazing Race.

The products will coincide with the Harlem Globetrotters 2010 World Tour, which begins on Dec. 26. The North American leg of the tour will see the team play nearly 270 games in more than 215 cities in 44 states, Canada and Puerto Rico through the first week of May 2010. The team will also play more 150 games internationally in 2010.

Cookie Jar Group is a Canadian-based global entertainment, consumer products and education company. Cookie Jar Entertainment has created, produced and marketed shows that have appeared on CBS, ABC, PBS, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon.

“This is a tremendously exciting partnership for us,” Kurt Schneider, Harlem Globetrotters' CEO, said in a statement. “The Cookie Jar Group has developed many of the most iconic, multi-platform brands in the world, and they are uniquely capable of creating broad consumer opportunities for the Globetrotters that capitalize on the team’s timeless appeal, as well as its current pop culture heat.”  Back to Home Page
