Survey: Duke (Not In Final Four) Tops Kentucky (In Final Four) As Favorite Men's College Hoops Team

By Barry Janoff

March 29, 2012: College football remains the favorite sport and the Duke Blue Devils the favorite men's college basketball team in a survey released today by Harris interactive to coincide with the Final Four this weekend.

Of the Final Four teams playing in New Orleans March 31 and April 2 for the national title, Kentucky was No. 2 and Ohio State No. 10, but neither Louisville or Kansas were among the Top Ten, according to The Harris Poll.

Among the women's hoops Final Four, being played in Denver, all are No. 1 seeds but only Connecticut was No. 1, followed by Baylor at No. 2 and Notre Dame at No. 4 (Tennessee was No. 3). But Stanford was not among the Top Ten.

Among college sports, men's college hoops was No. 2 behind football and women's hoops was No. 3. The top five also included college baseball and hockey. Football drew 43% of the votes, men's hoops 35% and women's hoops 25%, according to The Harris Poll.

The Duke men's basketball team has now been No. 1 on The Harris Poll for three consecutive seasons and eight times in the past 10 surveys. On the women's side, Connecticut has now been No. 1 for four straight polls and ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 every year since 2003.

College football has been ranked the most popular sport on every poll since 2007, with men's and women's college basketball No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, during that period.

The Harris Poll was conducted among 2,451 adults (of whom 615 said they follow college basketball) surveyed online between March 12-19, 2012 by Harris Interactive.
