FedEx Shows Daydreams Can Come True, It Can Happen To You
July 18, 2010: FedEx is supporting the fourth year of its PGA Tour championship FedEx Cup with a global golf sweepstakes that will be touted via a multi-media effort that includes TV, print and Internet.
The sweepstakes launched on July 16 and runs through Sept. 12, 2010, offering the top prize of an international golf trip for four to one of five destinations: Canada, Australia, Scotland, Spain or India.
A dedicated Web site, www.Fedexcup.com, features humorous, golf-themed commentaries from comedian Tom Shillue; an updated FedEx Cup standings board and information about upcoming FedEx Cup events on the PGA Tour.
Two 30-second TV spots will run on both network and cable. Print will appear in such publications as Golf Digest and Golf World; online ads will appear on business and golf Web sites. Lead agency is BBDO, New York.
The two spots show how daydreaming about winning the FedEx Cup global golf sweepstakes could lead to complications in real life. In "Carpool," four guys going to work are in a car on the highway. They suddenly find themselves in a golf cart amidst the speeding morning rush hour traffic. "What just happened?" one guy asks. "It's Paul," replies another, referring to the driver. "He's daydreaming about winning the FedEx Cup global sweepstakes." "I don't have time for this," the first guy yells. "I've got a call at 9:30." The four guys then find themselves in the golf car wearing kilts. "It looks like Paul's in Scotland," one of the passengers says. Another offers, "Wait a minute. They don't use golf carts in Scotland." The four men then find themselves running on the highway still in kilts with golf bags on their backs.
In "Pond," a man named Ed is in his office daydreaming about being in Australia as part of the FedEx Cup global sweepstakes. That turns his office into a water hazard, complete with alligators, much to the chagrin of the people who enter and find themselves a real part of the daydream. A voiceover in both offers, "We understand. You want to golf the world." Viewers are then directed to the Web site for more details.
The FedEx Cup participants will be determined in the final three events of the PGA Tour — The Barclays, the Deutsche Bank Championship and the BMW Championship — with the top 30 players ranked by points competing at the Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola Sept. 23-26 at Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club. Tiger Woods won in 2007 and 2009, Vijay Singh in 2008. Ernie Els has been the points leader for most of the 2010 season.
