Hole In One: Dunkin’ Donuts Said It's Losing The Donuts But Not The Donuts

By Barry Janoff

September 25, 2018: During the summer, IHOP changed its name to IHOb (for burgers) to tout a new menu item, then changed its name back. The chain, known for its pancakes, said sales of its hamburgers quadrupled.

This name change seems more permanent.

Dunkin’ Donuts, founded in 1950, is now just Dunkin’.

The Canton, Mass.-based chain said it was losing the Donuts, but not its donuts.

“After much speculation, today we revealed that we are updating our branding and will now be known simply as “Dunkin’,” CMO Tony Weisman, wrote in a letter posted on the brand’s Web site.

“Our new name is simpler, shorter and more modern, while still embracing our rich heritage by retaining the familiar pink and orange colors and iconic font that were introduced in 1973.”

The major change comes about two months after Dunkin’ Brands Group named David Hoffmann as its new CEO.

Also in July, Dunkin’ Brands Group hired Jones Knowles Ritchie to manage its brand identity and branding strategy.

Weisman soothed any fears consumers might have had about the company’s sweet products by saying, “There is no Dunkin’ without donuts!”

It also did not appear as if the current tag line would change, as Wesiman offered, “This is a significant milestone for our company, and we’re incredibly excited about what this represents for our brand, our franchisees and our guests. After all, America really does run on Dunkin’.”

New branding for the name change to Dunkin' is scheduled to begin to appear on packaging, marketing, Web site, social media and POP beginning January 2019.

Lead agency is BBDO Worldwide.

Duncan’ has sports alliances that include the NHL, New York Giants, New York Jets, New York Mets and New York Yankees, and has run marketing with such athletes as Eli Manning, Rob Gronkowski, Odell Beckham Jr. and David Ortiz.

Regarding the change, according to Weisman, “It also speaks to the breadth of our product offerings. We’re all about serving great coffee fast. But we’re also about donuts and baked goods and breakfast sandwiches.

While donuts may no longer appear in our logo, we remain committed to serving our signature donuts and will continue to offer new and seasonal varieties to delight donut lovers everywhere.”

Duncan’ (sans Donuts) has more than 12,500 locations worldwide. The brand also has official alliances that include JetBlue and Amtrak, as well as sibling Baskin Robbins.
