Dow Chemical Builds Global Sports Portfolio In Alliance With Special Olympics

March 6, 2011: The Dow Chemical Co., which last year became a worldwide partner of the International Olympic Committee, is building its international marketing base by becoming a sponsor of the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Financial terms of the alliance were not disclosed.

Dow, which is now the official chemistry company of the Special Olympics, joins other Summer Games sponsors including Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Mattel, Cisco, Microsoft and Hertz.

The 13th Summer Games is scheduled to be held in Athens, June 25-July 4. The event is expected to draw more than 7,000 Special Olympic athletes from more than 180 nations, who will participate in 22 Olympic-type sports.

Other sponsors of the Special Olympics include Coca-Cola, P&G, Mattel, Safeway, Wal-Mart, Bank of America and Lions Clubs International.

Like Dow, Coca-Cola and P&G are also worldwide partners of the IOC.

“Supporting the upcoming World Summer Games aligns with Dow’s core values of integrity and respect for people,” Andrew Liveris, Dow chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “The Special Olympics celebrates the human spirit unlike any other sporting event, and Dow is proud to be part of it as an official sponsor.”

In July 2010, Dow signed a deal with the IOC and now one of just 11 companies under the Olympic Partners Program (TOP). The other partners are Coke, P&G, Acer, Atos Origin, GE, McDonald's, Omega, Panasonic, P&G, Samsung and Visa.

"We are thrilled to have Dow’s support for the upcoming Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011,” Joanna Despotopoulou, president of Athens 2011, said in a statement. "The Special Olympics are about changing lives, building advocacy networks and creating a lasting positive impact. Dow’s commitment to excellence and helping people around the globe makes them an ideal partner for the Special Olympics."
