Marketing Dark Knight's 80th Party: Always Be Yourself, Unless You Can Be Batman

By Barry Janoff

May 13, 2019: Batman, conceived by artist Bob Kane with writer Bill Finger, doesn’t look a day over 39, but is celebrating his 80th anniversary this year with a bat cave full of activities, marketing and activation, including the first DC Batman 5K Run/Walk, scheduled for Batman Day, Sept. 21, in Los Angeles.

The run is part of a series of 5K and 10K events in select cities.

On Sept. 21, people around the world “will gather together to honor the timeless hero,” according to DC Comics.

Batman first appeared in DC’s Detective Comics No. 27, released on March 30, 1939. Detective Comics No. 1,000 was released on March 30, 2019.

According to DC, “The Bat-Signal will light up in major cities worldwide, alongside a wide array of fan celebrations, including interactive photo opportunities, live music, food, games and more. Plus, fans will race across the finish line in their favorite Caped Crusader attire in a series of 5K and 10K runs in select cities.”

In Los Angeles, registrants will receive an exclusive Batman race attire kit and gain entry to a pre-race expo and post-race finish line festival with live entertainment, plus complimentary photos with Batman.

Additional Batman-branded apparel and accessories will also be available for purchase.

The Los Angeles race, which is scheduled to begin at dusk, will “wind through some of the city's most iconic landmarks and tunnels, and finish at beautiful Grand Park.”

All DC Batman Run finishers will receive a limited-edition 80th anniversary finisher's medal to commemorate their accomplishment and the celebration of Batman.

The DC Batman Run is also scheduled to feature a virtual run, allowing running and Batman enthusiasts to participate even if they live outside of Los Angeles.

Batman fans worldwide can also share their experiences via #LongLiveTheBat and #Batman80.

The Batman race follows a DC Wonder Woman Run Series in 2018 in which more than 20,000 participated. The race is under the auspices of SON Events.

"We are excited to bring fans together to celebrate Batman's 80-year legacy," Maryellen Zarakas, svp-franchise management and marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products, said via the company.

“Batman has shown us that everyone has the inner strength and ability to be a super hero. Although he has the best tech and gadgets, at his core he's just a man that wants to do good in the world and that's why his character continues to resonate today."

Among other Batman 80 events, Warner Bros. and DC Comics are working with array of retail partners, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target, iTunes, Walmart, GameStop and Google Play.

Such global partners as LEGO, Mattel and Funko are releasing exclusive Batman 80th anniversary products throughout the year.

Six Flags locations across North America in August will extended hours and offer exclusive Batman-themed experiences and special merchandise.

Warner Bros. theme parks around the globe will host Batman 80th anniversary events, including Warner Bros. Movie World Australia, Parque Warner Madrid and Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi.

Among media partners, Cartoon Network in the U.S. and key territories will host exclusive Batman-themed programming and stunts for kids in September.

DC Universe — DC’s digital subscription service — will promote Batman content in September.

Custom artwork has been created that pays homage to Batman’s legacy in all forms of media.

A Batman profile pencil design is by iconic DC artist José Luis García-López; a digital paint design is by Admira Wijaya. The graphics will be featured throughout the celebration.

"Batman is one of the most iconic super heroes of all time, and to be able to create an event that celebrates 80 years of his existence is very exciting for our group," Mark Knutson, founder, SON Events, LLC, said via the firm.

"Now is the optimal time for sponsors to join us on this journey filled with so many moments of celebration and inspiration."
