NFL’s Dallas Cowboys $4.8B Again No. 1 World’s Most Valuable Sports Franchise

By Barry Janoff

July 18, 2018: If you are a fan of soccer, especially coming off the 2018 FIFA World Cup, you look at this as being a glass half full: Three of the Top Four world’s most valuable sports franchises are soccer clubs.

However, the glass can also be half empty: Only four of the world’s Top 25 most valuable sports franchises are soccer clubs.

The NFL’s Dallas Cowboys are the world’s most valuable sports team for the third straight year, valued at $4.8 billion, according to a new report from Forbes.

America's Team, under the ownership of Jerry Jones, could be the first sports franchise to top $5 billion.

The next three most valuable sports franchises are soccer clubs: Manchester United ($4.123 billion), Real Madrid ($4.088 billion) and Barcelona ($4.064 billion).

Those three clubs knocked the New York Yankees from No. 2 last year to No. 5.

The Yankees, with a value of $4 billion, lead six baseball teams in the Top 50, with five in the Top 25.

The cutoff to rank among the Top 50 sports teams is now $1.95 billion (Cleveland Browns), up $200 million from 2017, according to Forbes.

There are 106 sports franchises in total worth at least $1 billion, up from 87 last year.

No NHL, F1 or Nascar teams made the Top 50.

The NFL has 29 teams among the 50 most valuable sports franchises for the second straight year, with 12 among the Top 25.

Of the league’s 32 franchises, only the Cincinnati Bengals ($1.8 billion), Detroit Lions ($1.7 billion) and Buffalo Bills ($1.6 billion) failed to make the Forbes list.

The New England Patriots, valued at $3.7 billion, are No. 6 in the world. The Super Bowl LII champion Philadelphia Eagles come in at No. 22 at $2.65 billion.

New York is also home to the most valuable basketball team with the New York Knicks ($3.6 billion) ranked seventh overall and leading eight NBA teams in the Top 50. Crosstown rival Brooklyn Nets come in at $2.3 billion.

The Los Angeles Lakers, new home to LeBron James, are No. 8 at $3.3 billion. Analysts say the team’s value already has risen, and they should overtake Knicks next season as the NBA’s most valuable franchise.

The New York Giants tied at No. 8 at $3.3 billion. MetLife Stadium partners New York Jets, however, valued at $2.75 billion, had the biggest fall, down eight spots to No. 21, per Forbes.

The Top Ten also includes the two-time defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors ($3.1 billion), tied with the Washington Redskins at No. 10.

Also topping $3 billion: No. 12 Bayern Munich ($3.083 billion), San Francisco 49ers No. 13 ($3.05 billion) and tied at No. 14 at $3 billion the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The biggest gainer among the 50 richest teams wass the NBA’s Houston Rockets, which moved up 14 spots to No. 40 at $2.2 billion
