Coors Light Plans To Heat Up MLB Winter League With ESPN Desportes

November 18, 2010: Coors Light knows that baseball fans have no off-season and that, for many, even the "Hot Stove League" is not enough. With that in mind, the brand has signed a deal to become the presenting sponsor for ESPN Deportes'  coverage of the 2010 Dominican Baseball League and Caribbean Series.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In addition to reaching loyal baseball fans, Coors Light said the Winter Baseball League partnership presents an opportunity to "extend its reach among legal-drinking-age U.S. Latinos."

The Winter Baseball League runs through February 2011. The network’s coverage concludes with the Caribbean Series taking place in Puerto Rico on February 2011 with the league champions from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Venezuela and host Puerto Rico. The games will be played at Isidoro Garcia Baseball Stadium in Mayaguez.

Under terms the deal, the Coors Light brand will be integrated into all ESPN Deportes’ platforms, including TV, print, radio and online.  During the season, Coors Light will also be featured in the network’s marketing campaign, which includes out-of-home executions, such as billboards and bus advertising in New York.  

In addition, during all games, viewers will get updated information via a Coors Light-branded feature, “Notas Del Caribe,” that will include the latest news on athletes, games and other baseball-related news from the Caribbean. The Winter League has proved to be an increasingly important training ground for MLB, where more than 25% of players are Latino.

Coors Light will be replaced by Bud Light next season as the official beer sponsor of the NFL, so the brand is seeking to strengthen its connection to fans in other areas. The brand already has an alliance with ESPN in such areas as the "Coors Light Cold Hard Facts" segment during SportsCenter.

“Few sports are as popular with Latinos as baseball, and few things go as well with enjoying a ball game as the 'world’s most refreshing beer,'” Roger Garcia, Latino marketing manager for the Coors Family of Brands, said in a statement. “Coors Light has a long history of supporting the sports that matter most to Latino beer drinkers, from baseball to soccer to boxing.  We’re excited to team up with ESPN Deportes to bring people the excitement of the Winter Baseball season.”

The Dominican Baseball League consists of six teams: Águilas Cibaeñas, Azucareros del Este, Estrellas Orientales, Gigantes del Cibao, Leones del Escogido, and Tigres del Licey. Each team plays a 50-game schedule, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs. The winning team goes on to represent its country in the Caribbean Series.
