Viva La Vida: Coldplay In Play At Historic Super Bowl 50 Pepsi Halftime Show

By Barry Janoff

December 3, 2015: Following in the guitar chords and vocal melodies of U2, Rolling Stones, The Who, Michael Jackson, Prince and Beyoncé, Coldplay has been tapped to headline the Pepsi Halftime Show during Super Bowl 50.

The gig will be by far the largest audience to which the Viva La Vida band has ever played. During Super Bowl XLIX, 118.5 million viewers watched Katy Perry headline the Pepsi Halftime Show. The previous year, more than 115 million saw Bruno Mars play the lead during the Super Bowl XLVIII show.

It is expected that other top-name performers will be added to the historic Super Bowl 50 entertainment, to air on CBS on Feb. 7, 2016, in Levi's Stadium, located in the San Franciso Bay Area.

According to the NFL, the show will "echo elements of the NFL's "On the Fifty" campaign — honoring the past, recognizing the present and looking ahead to the next 50 years."

"We're so excited and thrilled to be playing the halftime show," lead singer Chris Mann said in a Pepsi-sponsored video. "The Super Bowl of music is now the Super Bowl. This is the greatest moment of our band's life."

Super Bowl 50 will be Pepsi's fourth year as title sponsor of the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and 14th year as an NFL partner.

Among other marketing support, Pepsi said it would give people behind-the-scenes access at Pepsi.com to see "how this monumental show will come together."

Beginning Jan. 11, a digital mini-series, "Pepsi Presents: The Super Bowl Halftime Show Show," will launch on Pepsi.com offering fans an "exclusive, all-access view of what it takes to create the biggest music event of the year in the middle of the biggest sports event of the year, Super Bowl 50."

Coldplay's seventh album, A Head Full Of Dreams, was released this week. Among others, Rihanna and Beyoncé perform on the album, so speculation is that they might also make guest appearances during the Super Bowl 50 show.

The Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show is an NFL Network Production and will be executive produced by Ricky Kirshner and directed by Hamish Hamilton.
