NHL, Sponsors Set To Score With Boston Winter Classic FanFest

December 30, 2009: The Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic is scheduled for New Year's Day at Boston's Fenway Park rain or shine - the current forecast calls for rain and snow - but the league and its marketing partners will get the party started on Dec. 31 with a free fan festival. The event is being presented by Bridgestone, Honda, Geico, Verizon Wireless and the U.S. Army, along with partners Bud Light, Compuware, EA Sports, McDonald's, Pepsi Max, Reebok, Sirius/XM, Ticketmaster and Upper Deck.

The NHL has had similar events during its first two Winter Classics in Buffalo and Chicago, but said that this year's fanfest will be bigger and bolder. According to NHL.com, the league has three times as many sponsors and is aiming for 10,000 spectators vs. about 7,500 at Wrigley Field during the 2009 Winter Classic in Chicago.

EA Sports offers the videogame version of the 2010 NHL Winter Classic. All presenting sponsors and partners will activate on-site on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 prior to game time at 1 PM, live on NBC and also via NHL Radio, Sirius/XM and NHL.com. Activities also include autograph sessions, giveaways, interactive games and live music. James Taylor is scheduled to sing the National Anthem to open the game.

The NHL is said to be considering Yankee Stadium as the site for a possible outdoor game on Jan. 1, 2011, with a second outdoor game in Canada also getting heavy consideration.
