Change-Ups Coming To MLB, All-Star Game, Home Run Derby, Broadcasts

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

March 14, 2019: MLB and the MLB Players’ Assn. have unveiled numerous changes to the game to be installed over the next two seasons that will impact game length, marketing broadcast partners, the All-Star Game presented by MasterCard and the T-Mobile Home Run Derby.

MLB said that, subject to discussions with broadcast partners, inning breaks would be reduced from 2:05 to 2:00 in local games and from 2:25 to 2:00 in national games.

The Commissioner’s Office retains the right to further reduce the breaks to 1:55 in local and national games for the start of the 2020 season.

For rosters for the All-Star Game presented by MasterCard, scheduled for July 9 in Cleveland’s Progressive Field, fan voting will now be conducted in two rounds: a “primary round” that maintains the All-Star voting, followed in late June or early July by an “Election Day."

On that day, the top three vote-getters at each position and top six for outfielders in each league during the primaries will be voted on by fans in a prescribed time period to determine the All-Star starters.

Additional details of the new All-Star Game voting format will be released in April.

For players, All-Star bonus payments will be given to the top vote-getters who advance beyond the Primary Round. In addition, prize money for players on the winning All-Star team will be increased, beginning this year.

If the game itself goes into extra innings, each team will begin with a runner on second base each inning. Players who have already appeared in the game but were replaced, would be allowed to re-enter as runners.

MLB said that total player prize money for the 2019 T-Mobile Home Run Derby scheduled for July 8, the evening before the All-Star Game, would increase to $2.5 million, including $1 million for the winner.

The 2018 T-Mobile Home Run Derby had a total prize pool of $525,000. Bryce Harper, who won the event in his then home Nationals Stadium, earned $125,000.

The 2019 T-Mobile Home Run Derby would have awarded a total prize pool of $725,000 with  $150,000 to the winner before the new agreement.

Among other key changes, there will be a three-hitter minimum for each pitcher (barring injury or the end of an inning) beginning in 2020.

The active roster limit from Opening Day through August 31 and in post-season games will increase from 25 to 26, and the minimum number of active players will increase from 24 to 25.  The current Major League Rules allowing for a 26th player for doubleheaders would be amended to allow for a 27th player.

MLB and the MLBPA said they would form a joint committee to study other potential rule changes.
