Castrol Oil Extends Soccer Alliance From World Cup To Major League Soccer

May 11, 2010: Castrol Motor Oil is extending its alliance with soccer from the FIFA World Cup to a deal that makes it the official motor oil of Major League Soccer, the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team and Mexican National Soccer team. Terms of the multi-year alliance were not disclosed.

In 2008, Castrol signed a six-year deal as a FIFA World Cup sponsor, which includes the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and two FIFA Confederations Cups.

Castrol Motor Oil signed the new deal with Soccer United Marketing, which holds all commercial rights to MLS and the U.S. Soccer Federation and promotional and marketing rights to Mexican National Team games played in the U.S.

“Castrol GTX High Mileage is engineered to outperform and outlast the competition through a passion to be the best, dedication to technical prowess and teamwork,” Marisa Ciardi, associate brand manager for Castrol GTX High Mileage, said in a statement. “Soccer players and fans know that this is what it takes to be a champion, and it’s what makes our new partnership with Soccer United Marketing a winning combination.”

Other MLS marketing partners include American Airlines, AT&T, Continental Tire, Panasonic, Pepsi, The Home Depot, Visa and Volkswagen.

“We are excited to welcome Castrol, a company with a strong commitment to the global sport of soccer as a partner of FIFA, to the SUM family," Kathy Carter, evp for Soccer United Marketing, said in a statement. “Castrol joins us in an incredibly exciting year, as MLS celebrates its 15th season, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup takes place in South Africa.”

Top tier FIFA 2010 World Cup marketing partners include adidas, Coca-Cola, Emirates, Hyunda, Sony and Visa. Along with Castrol, second tier FIFA World Cup partners include Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser) and McDonald's.
