Cam Newton, Nickelodeon Team For Show To Help Kids' Dreams Become A Reality

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

September 22, 2015: Cam Newton is not planning to give up his day job as quarterback for the NFL's Carolina Panthers, but he may be laying plans for his life after football.

Newtown has signed on to become host of I Wanna Be, the working title of an adventure-docu-series scheduled to air on Nickelodeon in 2016.

According to Nickelodeon, I Wanna Be will follow Newton "as he takes real kids on the ride of their lives to help make their dreams come true."

The 20-episode series will shoot during the NFL off-season.

Nickelodeon said that in each episode, Newton would "step into the lives of two different kids and take them on a journey that will push them closer to fulfilling their dreams." That could include decorating award-winning cakes to landing a spot on a Broadway stage.

The kids on each show will be "mentored by experts and supported by Newton as he cheers them on, and participates in the action, every step of the way."

“Time in the spotlight has made me realize the importance of creating positive messages to inspire the next generation," Newton, now in his fifth NFL campaign out of Auburn, said in a statement. "I’m very passionate about mentoring young people, and this show will be the perfect opportunity to help talented kids get the chance to pursue their dreams."

Newton has endorsement deals that include Gatorade, Drakkar Essence, Under Armour and Beats by Dre.

He also is heavily involved with the Cam Newton Foundation, which "is committed to enhancing the lives of youth by addressing their educational, physical and social needs."

Entering 2015, Newton had passed for 85 touchdowns and rushed for 34 more, and is nearing 15,000 career passing yards.

“Time in the spotlight has made me realize the importance of creating positive messages to inspire the next generation."

He was selected to the Pro Bowl in the 2011 and 2013.

Newton is the only player in the modern era to be awarded the Heisman Trophy, win a national championship and become the first overall pick in the NFL draft all in the same one-year span.

"To be able to do (this) all on Nickelodeon — a network I grew up watching — is extremely exciting," said Newton.
