Legendary 'Bullitt' Mustang Coming To Mecum Auctions, Could Bring A Cool $2M

By Barry Janoff

August 15, 2019: There are car classic cars, iconic cars and ground-breaking cars.

And then there is what might be the most legendary and coolest car in Hollywood history.

The original Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang fastback driven by actor Steve McQueen in the 1968 movie, “Bullitt,”  is scheduled to hit the Mecum Kissimmee 2020 auction in January 2020.

According to Mecum Auctions, “Yes, we’re talking about the actual car used in the movie and not some replica or mockup.”

The movie, filmed in and around San Francisco, features McQueen as SFPD Lt. Frank Bullitt, who takes on the mob and political bad guys, and features what has been referred to as “the most intense, thrilling car chase scenes ever filmed.”

The car up for auction is one of just two Mustangs used in the film and is named “Bullitt,” after the main character.

The auto could become the most expensive Mustang ever auctioned by Mecum, topping the $2.2M for a 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake at Mecum Kissimmee earlier this year.

According to Mecum, the car is being consigned by Sean Kiernan, whose family has owned the car for more than 40 years (and whose father paid $6,000 for the car in 1974 and subsequently rebuffed several attempts by McQueen himself to purchase the vehicle).

Mecum, which this week signed a national broadcast extension of its deal with NBC Sports thru 2024, said the car — “considered by many to be the world’s single most recognizable and celebrated vintage Mustang — remains in original condition and retains many distinguishable and unique elements from the movie.”

The selling price would have to top $7 million to become the most expensive auto ever auctioned off by Mecum, a 1964 Ford GT40 Prototype GT/104, which went for $7 million in 2014.

The Mustang was displayed at LeMay - America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Wash. in July, and will be exhibited at various automotive events around the country leading up to the Mecum Kissimmee 2020 auction in January.

McQueen’s granddaughter, actress Molly McQueen, appeared in a 2018 commercial touting the 2019 Ford Mustang, which including 50th anniversary editions of the “Bullitt.”

The original “Bullitt” also was featured in an episode of “Jay Leno’s Garage.”

According to BBC’s “Top Gear” show, “In January 1968, Warner Bros purchased a pair of Mustangs for use in the film — vin numbers 8R02S125558 (aka ’558) and 8R02S125559 (aka ’559).

“Mustang ‘558 was used for all of the heavy lifting — the jump shots you witnessed on screen — while ‘559 was the car actually driven by McQueen. Once filming had wrapped, ‘558 went to a salvage yard, and only resurfaced in California (in 2017).

“But later in 1968, ‘559 was sold to a Warner Bros employee named Robert Ross, who kept hold of it until 1970, when he sold it on to a New Jersey police detective named Frank Marranca (for  $6,000).

“Detective Marranca kept the car until 1974, before selling it to Robert and Robbie Kiernan for $6,000.

“The Kiernans begin using this Mustang as their daily driver, which is the very definition of doing life correctly.”
