Tom Glavine, Two-Time Cy Young Winner, Now Pitching For AirTran

August 20, 2009: Members of the 1995 World Series champion Atlanta Braves rotation don't fade away, they keep on pitching. John Smoltz has signed to play for the St. Louis Cardinals, and now former teammate Tom Glavine has signed a deal to become a pitchman for AirTran Airways, a low-cost carrier based in Orlando. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Glavine, who retired in 2008 with a 305-203 record, two Cy Young awards and 10 All-Star Game appearances, will be featured in radio and outdoor in the Atlanta area, where he pitched for the Braves from 1987-2002 and again in 2008 after five years with the New York Mets. He was released by the Braves this past June after spending time in the minors to rehab offseason shoulder and elbow surgery.

AirTran creative will show Glavine in a baseball uniform with the text, "2,607 Strikeouts. 305 Wins. 1 Airline." Internet will support. AirTran's lead agency is Cramer-Krasselt, Chicago.

Other athlete spokespersons for AirTran include IndyCar driver Danica Patrick and NFL quarterbacks Donovan McNabb and Matt Ryan.

"Tom Glavine is one of the greatest pitchers to ever play professional baseball and we are excited and honored to have him join the AirTran team," Tad Hutcheson, AirTran Airways' vp-marketing and sales, said in a statement. "Glavine's accomplishments both on and off the field exemplify excellence, leadership and a commitment to community. These attributes represent the AirTran Airways brand and the service we offer our passengers every day."
